West nab (marsden)

Has anyone got a topo for here? I've got over the moors, but sounds like there are problems more out there!

There was apparently more information in a local guide called 'climbing and bouldering guide to huddersfield' but that is long out of print and unless someone on here has a copy I think you will just have to go with 'over the moors' I'm afraid. Definitely don't miss out on Archery if you climb around 7a. Absolutely class.

I have copy somewhere in box, that hasn’t been found since we moved house. However a lot of the stuff that didn’t go in the Over the Moors guide is often about 2 foot high or rather contrived.

There's a very cool face thing carved into the rock (longstanding / lot of years old). Been ages since I've been up there so forget exactly where it was.

Everything but on here:

I have a copy of the hudds guide if you are unable to get it from elsewhere.

This was the first crag I went too post lockdown. I'd agree with the above.

I have both guides but all the good stuff is in Over T'Moors TBH.

Its not super local, so I guess ill stick with over the moors for now. If a return trip is on the cards i'll chase up the hudds guide. Thanks for the offers and knowledge.

Just as a heads up, I drove past this evening (trying and failing to get the little one to sleep) and the usual parking lay-by has been blocked with boulders. Seems like the BMC are aware and have been in touch with the council, but apparently it is within the landowners rights. On UKC someone has suspected it might be due to fly tipping (quite a few other lay-bys across the top have boulders too). Hopefully they can come to some sort of solution since its a really nice little venue.

Alternative parking is available in a proper big parking lay-by near the junction with the road going down to Holmfirth. But this would mean a bit more of a trek across the moor to get to the crag, not sure if there is a decent footpath. Or walking back along the road which would be a bit sketchy.

I've got a PDF of the relevant bit of the Huddersfield guide after finding a thread on ukc and mailing the guy there. Drop me a line - don't think PMs allow attachments?

Went for the first time in July and really enjoyed it. The topos on ukc are confusing though - just listing problem numbers and no descriptions. I added a few descriptions but the moderator seems dormant. There was room for 3-4 cars on the crag side down the hill and I thought you might squeeze in a slightly dodgy park at the blocked layby higher on the other side. Some smaller boulders might be shiftable by someone strong and stealthy?

Good knowledge Steve. Didn't realise you could park on the crag side of the road.

I wouldn't mind a look at the pdf. Can you put it on wetransfer or something similar so its easy for anyone interested to download. Otherwise I can just PM you my email address.

Brilliant, thanks. Downloaded.

Archery is excellent. I think probably the best problem at West Nab (that I've tried anyway).

I haven't looked at the file (on my work laptop) but if whoever produced it wants to get in touch and give permission then it can go on Unknown Stones.

Authored by a guy called Paul Perkins, the "Huddersfield area" guide.

Boo, looks like the parking is an ongoing bone of contention:
"landowners at West Nab have replaced the original boulders preventing parking in the long-established areas with larger
versions, plus dug deeper and wider holes"

Here you go, link expires in 7 days: https://we.tl/t-O62oERqfna
Is the parking any better now (boulders on the obvious verges)?

Got it, thanks.

There are boulders in the verge on the left (as you look down the hill) but a couple of cars were parked in there and were well off the road. The layby slightly up the hill on the other side of the road has mounds of earth which are falling apart and we got two vans in there no problem - just a couple of hundred meters to walk down the road.

Short note - parking seems a little easier. Room for a couple of cars by the Cocking Stones footpath and the verge higher on the uphill side seems to have been cleared of stones/mounds since last visit.

That's good - I went in June last year and had to park quite a way up the hill and walk back down.
