Given the freakily dry weather I thought it might be useful to put up a thread on fires, especially if locals have any useful info on resulting access problems etc. To add to the Bamford fire there is now  a reported fire at Wharncliffe in the last few hours: in the woods between the Lodge and Long John's Stride. Also reports of fires on the Lancashire Moors. Rob Dyer is live now on the Yorkshire area BMC meet talking about the subject.

Not meaningful to be flippant, I've been concerned about current Black Rocks nightly beers and barbecue festival and written to the FC about the fire risk, however, the thread title reads 'Fires started by Offwidth'.

I think it’s fairly simple.

Just like in previous years where the risk becomes high, the moorland will be shut by the landowners.

Wildfires are difficult to fight, take a huge amount of resources, risk communities, result in firefighter injuries, have a massive impact on the environment and wildlife and are usually caused by stupidity.

In the last week or so I have spent time on Marsden Moor and Ilkley Moor, one has pretty much recovered 15 months after a fairly significant fire, the other is a long way off actually being recovered.

Noticed that the little reservoir intake thing half way up the snake has become increasingly popular as a picnic spot.  Absolutely mobbed on Sunday late afternoon.  Busy too on Monday afternoon on my return with lots of bbq smoke drifting about.

Wharncliffe fire was stable but seems to be be growing again: looks to be several areas affected towards the Lodge. Could also see a new fire over Black Hill way.

I drove past there on Sunday evening. You could see the trash dumped in the brook from the road. Utterly disgusting to see this areas like this.

Following a spate of damaging recent fires, the Peak District National Park has come together with its partners to announce that barbecues and open fires are not permitted anywhere in open countryside throughout the Peak District.

As landowner permission is required to light or tend a fire, the Authority has said that all major land owners and key landowner representatives within the Peak District have this week confirmed they do not give their permission and so barbecues and open fires are not allowed.

Good news really I guess.
