Bone Conducting Headphones
April 29, 2020, 05:45:52 pm
I'm tempted to give a set a go, have UKB members had good/bad/terrible experience with these?

I have wireless headphones but they're Sony buds and I just can't hear a thing when I'm wearing them (even on a relatively low volume).

Got the partner a pair and she loves them!

Have used them a couple of times and I like them although can be a little quiet at times but it sounds like thats what you're after?

Highly recommended here!

I really like mine, absolutely brilliant for running, riding or climbing.

Can you wear them when (not) sleeping? My earbuds a bit on comfy and the pillow ear seems to occlude and block the sound sometimes.

They're great for allowing you to listen to music without blocking out the sounds around you when running etc.

On the downside, anyone near you will be able to hear your music too.

Not the Aftershockz, as the band would get in the way unfortunately.

I haven't found that at all unless you have them maxed out, is this in an office environment?

I’ve had mine for about a year now and think they are great.

Definitely safer when running as I’m able to stay aware of what’s going on around me.

First few steps felt odd as they felt heavy at the back of my head but had got used to this by the end of the road.

Partner has a pair of Aftershokz and swears by them. Make sure you size them properly, not much room for adjustment; I I can't use hers on my mahoossive heid!

Thanks all.

Have used them a couple of times and I like them although can be a little quiet at times but it sounds like thats what you're after?

I just don't want to hear nothing but the music etc.

Does she have the 'mini' version then?

Mostly out running. The ones I used were fairly cheap borofone ones. To get them loud enough to hear, it meant that everyone you ran passed could hear them too.

Maybe more expensive models don't have this issue?

Sounds like they are exactly what you are after then.

I've not had issues with everyone else being able to hear what you are listening to. When the misses has them on i can't hear what she is listening to (thankfully)!

Possibly, I'll check when she's back from her run and message you.

I ended up buying a set of these:
https://aftershokz.co.uk/products/titanium

N.B. if you do buy a set there's a measuring device to determine if you're 'Regular' or... er 'Mini'  :tumble: (it's also worth noting that their YouTube video have the sizing colours the wrong way around).

When I initially tested them out around the house I was pretty unimpressed, sound quality was very average, leakage was high and although I was aware I was being talked at I couldn't really determine what was being said.

However, out on the road yesterday they were great. It's slightly odd hearing music and yet also fully hearing the wind noise. It seems I'm still plenty able to hear things coming from the side and behind whereas in-front seems limited (as per above). It's also nice to be able to skip and adjust the volume easily enough on the 'phones themselves.

What are they like with spoken word/audio books/podcasts rather than music?

You can’t expect too much of them really, the sounding good part is inherently compromised by the safe to run in part. It’s one of those “pick two (or maybe one in this case) of three” type situations.

Amazing technology though- I first heard of them from through them being the only type of headphones allowed at one of my other half’s races where they were described as “bone cancelling headphones” over the PA.

I did berate myself sat on the sofa having expected some kind of magic bullet that simultaneously allowed me to listen to music and hear traffic with zero compromise  :chair:.

I've just tried the Enormocast and Trainingbeta.com podcasts and yeah, that's fine. If they weren't a lurid colour I'd try them for Skype/Teams too (I've learnt my others have sufficient range to get to the kitchen/kettle).

Thanks. Wasn't sure that spoken word wound have the density of sound to make the cut with conduction tech. Think I need to get a demo from someone/somewhere.

How do they sit with sunnies and helmet straps? Look like they might interfere

I've only one ride so far to comment but I was finding they need to be the last bit of kit/shit to go on. I draw the line at posting a selfie. I think like sunnies they might pinch after several hours. I needed the mini which will still fit in a jersey pocket but don't expect them to bend much, they feel like they're designed to pinch inward to keep contact.

Sorry, was completely shit getting back to you. Glad they are working well.

No worries, thanks nonetheless.

Slight digression of thread anyone recommend any Bluetooth earbuds? I don't mind wired they don't have to be fully wireless. I'd like them to stay in when running etc and not to break easily. High water resistance would be great.
In case anyone wonders about buying Jaybird headphones, don't, they're shit. I've had a pair for a year or so and they've totally broken, never stayed in terribly well and generally weren't remotely worth the nearly £100

As a footnote to the original topic I'm finding battery life/in-use time to be a little underwhelming.
