Runaway Global Warming
October 11, 2004, 10:09:43 am
http://www.guardian.co.uk/climatechange/story/0,12374,1324379,00.html

'But the fear held by some scientists is that the greater than normal rises in C02 emissions mean that instead of decades to bring global warming under control we may have only a few years. At worst, the figures could be the first sign of the breakdown in the Earth's natural systems for absorbing the gas.
That would herald the so-called "runaway greenhouse effect", where the planet's soaring temperature becomes impossible to contain. As the icecaps melt, less sunlight is reflected back into space from ice and snow, and bare rocks begin to absorb more heat. This is already happening'

It seems perverse to me that so much money and attention is directed at the limited/bogus threat posed by global terrorism, whilst the entire planet might be on the verge of irreversible metabolic shutdown.

you'd better get on mecca before it gets too hot!

seriously though, i'd heard that if the icecapz melt it'l shut down the warm atlantic currents (and all the other deep sea currents) that keep the UK warm, and trigger  an ice-age over western europe?

its not as if the mina polluter (i.e. the USA) will give a fuck aboug CO2 omissions anyway, since they've failed to sign up to that treaty thing, just cos they like their big cars too much. another global triumph for bush. Vote Bush.

I don't think anybody will take this sort of threat really seriously until something disastrous happens...and by then it'll probably be too late.

Unfortunately, most of us are guilty of adding to the problems - the increase in air traffic is one of the worst offenders, and we all love those cheap airfairs don't we?

Time to buy a couple of Hummers for the school run and some nice patio heaters now it's getting a bit nippy.

Have had a quick google browse on global warming. A surprising or maybe not surprising amount of the stuff at the top of the list is Americans trying to claim it's all just scare-mongering. An interesting site worth checking out is this one mapping global events which may be atributable to GW.

i was reading about this a few days ago. they asked loads of parents how many kids are abducted each year in britain. there were 16 last year or summit but a lot of the parents thought there 100 to 450 per year  ...

probably clingy mothers who'd rather see there kids get diabetes and heart disease than let them go play in the park where there's a billion to 1 chance they'll get nicked by a pedo.

i was under the impression that kids were more at risk from abuse from members of their own family, church, youth groups etc, other adults known to the family in a position of trust rather than randoms being pinched off the streets by mentalists.
