The best roof problems in the Uk
October 09, 2004, 01:57:17 am
Everyone likes getting horizontal...

So what are the best roof problems in the Uk?

Three Rules:

For starters, I reckon a proper roof problem has to involve at least one or two moves in full anti gravity mode, with feet off the back wall.

And secondly, a roof has to be steeper than, what, 45 degrees? Open to opinion here, but if you can campus on crimps, then it can't be a roof...

And third, the longer the roof the better!  Quality also important, but length does mean extra quality points.

So I say again, what are the best roof problems in the Uk?

Lou Ferrino, Dolphin Belly Slap, The Crack (Cromlech), Muscular Obscurity (if you know where that is, you get browny points) - old school classic with about 10 minutes of upside down, stomach churrning madness!  Winner.

tims crack v10
hueco crack v7
special cases v12
xxxx v10

there's also a horizontal roof crack thing in the eden valley which me and a friend did at v4/5 ish by bridging. with out bridging it wud be properly hard. footjams all the way.

plus the 150 foot drop at the cave opening kinda puts you off the last few dynamic moves (it's described as a cave but really it's just a big hole set in the middle of a massive cliff). i can't remember the bastard name of the cave now though. it's driving me nuts

Since you copied this topic off Rocktalk, shall I copy my post over too

Well,  maybe not. I found a couple of cool ones yesterday:

The Bat @ Caley
Nora Batty @ Caley

The former is completely pointless and great fun, the latter looks very class indeed.

Now now Stuart, i thought you of all people may have a teeny tiny warm spot for 'Toms.  Petes Power Pull - oh, it feels so nice.  Even nicer in little purple silky feel shorts I should imagine.  No, but really, everything at toms roof should go on the list.

Tom's roof is an excellent place! I must admit, I didn't have a pair of purpley shorts on when I did the PowerPull (not a euphemism  ), does this adversely affect the grade at all?

Ben's roof at the snore is another mini-route roof problem. Rockattrocity is great, how hard are the sitter moves? Must be pretty hard to get a 9 up to 8a?

I know not in the UK, but arguably the best roof problem I have ever pulled on to is something in Font at Cul de Chien called Maxx or something? climbs out of a roof into a crack thing. excellent.

you can't have the tick until you rock the puple leg-huggers ;) the grade stays the same as long as your wearing DMM tracksuit bottoms past your belly button, but other than that, im not sure.

Ahh, but there's a big difference between a roof problem with a back wall for feet and one without. Completely different style IMHO. :)

you mean eclipse don't you - none of the others finish in a crack?

if you do mean eclipse, i can believe it - probably the most enjoyable problem i've ever tried. :D

yo dobbin, the moves into it are probably worth 7b+ (start right on sidepull to the right of flake, left hand small crimp next to it) but are pretty burly and RA feels desperate after doing them.

under no illusion that its a  great, but my favourite is the Neb Roof at Shaftoe (V4/5ish?) .   Cos' its ammenable to the applicance of SCIENCE (a funky simultaneous toe-hook and toe-cam) its probably the only true roof (one where you can't have feet on the back wall whilst pulling the lip) that I can do.... curse my puny arms...  the cruel joke of a callous god... (somewhere there is a 13 year old girl wondering why she's got the Huber-esque biceps that SHOULD HAVE BEEN MINE!).

Think the Font thing was called Eclipse - thanks Dave. I got to but couldn't use the crack on the headwall. Pulling on in the roof felt ok, but the sitter would be tres hard (see what I've done there?)
