BMC Peak Area Newsletter: November 2019

The BMC Peak Area Meeting will take place at The Norfolk Arms in Ringinglow on Wednesday 27 November 2019, starting at 7.30pm (food from 6.30pm).

Come to our next gathering of Peak District climbers and walkers and get involved in the BMC.

Area meetings are run by volunteers and provide an opportunity for you to discuss issues and influence decisions affecting climbers and walkers locally and nationally, and to meet like-minded people and enjoy a sociable night out.

Area AGM elections

The November meeting is also the Area AGM and will include elections for various volunteer roles.

Annual Quiz

It just wouldn’t be the end of year meeting without the legendary annual quiz.

Meeting agenda and additional information will be made available nearer the meeting date.

All are welcome; food will be provided by the BMC, available from 6.30pm.

Properly howled with laughter when reading this. Where's Dave when you need to wad him?

Last but definitely least, a mention must go out to former BMC Peak Area news correspondent, white Anasazi speculator and one-time Right Eliminate chockstone enfant terrible Simon Lee for his quick ascent of Ben’s Roof at the Tor. Well, I say ‘quick’ – such terms are of course relative. Simon’s penchant for a protracted war of attrition that would put the Siege of Thessalonica to shame (how’s about that for an obscure reference?) means that his five-year blink-of-an-eye ascent of Ben’s Roof stands out for its merciful brevity. Simon may have been camped out in those kneebars like an Extinction Rebellion protester, but all mickey-taking aside, it’s a tremendous effort. Simon kept the faith, showed great resilience and walks away with a coveted tick of one of Peak Limestone’s most sought-after 7b+s. Chapeau.

Hoping to make it for the quiz, Reeve was frothing about it yesterday down the Works! I think I saw a glimpse of EvilReeve poke out from behind that normally benign demeanor

A team of UKB users past and present (myself, Dave, JB, Bonjoy, Kim, Cofe, Obi-Wan is lost, Duncan C and Mrs T_B) won the quiz last night.  All the usual bickering about what's worth a bonus point, team sizes and whether the answers were even correct was involved. The two-years-dormant charades round was revived but with a hillwalking(!) twist.

Hopefully Reeve or 205Chris will post the questions soon.

Quiz rules: the answer on the sheet is always what counts, even if its wrong. Apologies again for the approximate anagram but it added to the fun and I got a well deserved ribbing.

3b. Who won the 2019 Montane Winter Spine Race? To the nearest hour what was the winning time?
