storing pads in/under campervan
December 28, 2019, 07:20:55 pm
I am fortunate enough to have a camper van (converted t4 thing), but when going away for the weekend bouldering in it, having more than 1 pad inside and eating/sleeping makes cooking/sleeping difficult. I was thinking of stashing one (or 2) under the van in a tarp to stop it getting soaked. Has anyone got any experience with this or any good tricks?

Ask a bed shop to carefully remove the thick plastic covering on a mattress - if you can get it cut so just one end is open, it's ideal for storing a pad or two in overnight. That's the best/cheap solution I came up with when I lived on the road for two years.

You can get roof bags on eBay (alternative to roof box) that would probably do the job. C.£30.

In the Grampians we rolled ours up in a big tarp and either just put them next to the van (when off in the middle of nowhere) or then stepped them to the top when in areas with other people (had roof bars). Obviously not foolproof but given the effort it took to get them up there we figured we'd here someone fucking around trying to steal them!

We took a Moon Saturn away with us on our Eurotour and it was a massive pain in the T4 so we'd regularly stash it underneath the van. The pop top didn't allow for strapping it up top.

One day a man came up to the van window shouting and pointing and I soon realised that the rain had washed the pad out from beneath the van and it was jammed under his rear bumper a little down the road (this was in Mallorca).

Can fit one pad on the front seats, but I've also got a organic fuckingmassive pad, which makes it more difficult. I mentioned the mattress thing to the other half, and she says she thinks we still have the mattress bag  :2thumbsup: , so I think I will give that a go next trip.
Roof stashing doesn't work unfortunately (pop top), which is what I would do otherwise I think.

cheers everyone!

My moon Saturn fits in the front along with a moon warrior that's where I keep mine.

ahh ok, mines a double captains chair too but we don't really use it unless there is more than the 2 of us as the bed folds up into 2 seats.
