Peak wild camping spots
April 23, 2019, 09:08:59 pm
Hi all, wanting to take 10yr old daughter and 3 friends out wild camping for a night in the Peak District. Anyone have any ideas of good spots. A friend suggested Lawrencefield as it’s out of sight. Thinking pop up tents if raining and outdoors if nice. Don’t want to get moved on my police or rangers at 2am. Any suggestions welcome. Cheers

Millstone suggested also as it’s managed by Sheffield council and not rangers. Hence not policed

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Probably best not to advertise any wild camping spots in the Peak on a public forum IMO though.

A few years since I posted but still a regular viewer. Climbing voyeurism?

Fair point on posting spots. Please PM me if you have any suggestions.

The Robin Hood caves are traditionally a classic place to spend a night out

Once your away from the honeypot spots you can pretty much wildcamp anywhere, especially if you get away from the Eastern Edges. Park on the snake pass and go for a wander up a clough, or wander over Shatton Moor.
To be honest I wouldn't bother with Millstone/Lawrencefield. Your car well get locked in the carpark, it has potential to be midgie hell from this time of year onwards (worse than other places) and they're both shit holes in the ground.
TBH I'd just go to the Eric Byne campsite. You'll probably have it to yourself, you can play on the Rocks at Birchen, it's 'rough & ready' so not much more than wild camping anyway and you're not gonna get pestered by a warden in the middle of the night :)

Plus when the little darlings have fully mashed your swede you can retreat to the pub for some well needed refreshment.

Any acceptable van spots? Meeting friends for the weekend for a walk and maybe a boulder if the weather isn't too grim. Somewhere around Hayfield?

Never been to the peak....

Oh, and any good cafes/pubs for eats?

It's not great camping weather at the mo, hth.

If in doubt, stick it in front of Raven Tor, sideways, blocking the road. Heckle shark on Ben's and go for a shit out the back door.

Also you've picked your time to come down when I'm out of action you butt.

Hence the exceptionally helpful line 2 there....

There's a lot of carparks / laybys near Eastern Grit but most of them are either double-yellowed in to prevent actual parking or pay parking, or given the reliably high "anti-visitor" policy of PNP and DCC, possibly both at once. I can't think of the best options off the top my head right now. Raven Tor is not one tho.

Are there any, actual, you know, decent camp sites?

North Lees, Eric Byne, cheap and cheerful AFAIK and decent locations.

There is a big car park and public toilets in Hayfield, I’m not sure if the car park is “no overnight stays” though, it might be worth trying to find out.
Failing that, I think you’d get away with overnighting at the normal parking at the end of the road past the pub (the “normal” parking as for the walk up to Kinder)

If you get stuck, drop me a line  ;D

Will have a good think anyway. There's been a van parked up in a layby on Ringinglow Road, on the run out of Sheffield towards Stanage for some time now. (Near The Ox Stones, Burbage Moor). I wouldn't want to park up and camp for security reasons.

There's also the old road near Mam Tor (look on the map) outside of Castleton. I can imagine that might offer something, and  slightly more towards the other side of the Peak. There are some good campsites around in that area too.
Just pop campsites near Castleton in Goggle. The Edale campsite is popular too (Newfold Farm), with The Old Nags Head pub close by.

The road passing Apparent North, Stanage has a nice aspect.

Err - I'm sure the OP said somewhere near Hayfield...

I'm not local, but Kinder Road, as I think may have already been suggested might be worth it for just one night.

https://goo.gl/maps/AdnWANEdGsS9vMmD6

Its a dead end road, with only the caravan site and a couple of farms up the end.
Hayfield is well served with Pubs/chippies etc.

Might be worth heading a bit further into the peak though is other than a walk up onto kinder it isn't really near any of the popular peak haunts.

The old road up to Mam Tor is a good bet, lots of campers up there usually - reminiscent of early 90's traveler site of late though.  Castleton well served for eats/drinks etc.

Seconded for North Lees. Been there a few times, stopping over in the camping pods (which are a great / cheap option for non-van dwellers). Perfect for Stanage obviously and also v convenient for Hathersage for cafe / breakfast / pubs etc as well.
