Grampians Access Issues
March 17, 2019, 04:09:54 am
I'm sure most of you have seen something about this.

Long story short, Parks Victoria are blanket banning climbing in most of the Grampians National Park.

No consultation, no clear communication, rangers fining people at areas that Parks Vic press release have said we can climb at.

Some of those bans are in really strange places, with no vegetation or aboriginal art. The reasons behind the bans seem very vague and I imagine the whole thing is super frustrating for the locals.

I'm glad we have the BMC in this country. Sounds like Gramps climbers are starting to organise and are trying to begin a dialogue with the park management. I hope it works.

Update from Simon Carter. Sounds like a right stitch-up.

Whole thing is mental, seems like the type of bureaucracy you'd get in a 3rd World Country.

I must admit I've not been following this very closely, but why can't these decisions be judicially reviewed? Legal costs would have to be crowdsourced, but I'm sure it's possible. Sounds like there would be plenty of ammo.

Edit: a quick google reveals JR has been threatened and may be underway.

Such a clusterfuck, this whole thing. I for one would contribute to a judicial review fund.

I would love to go climbing there again but currently would be reticent about booking a trip.

Write up here. https://savegrampiansclimbing.org/2020/08/14/taipan-spurt-and-bundaleer-temporarily-banned/

Really depressing. One of the best cliffs in the world that I really wanted to climb on again.  :'(

So because the Aboriginals were OK with chipping routes, climbing is now banned? ;)

At what point does it start to affect international tourism? Although there isn't much allowed over there right now.

I'd be surprised if Hollow Cave doesn't go next, must have been used as a shelter at some point.

The area with Hollow Mountain Cave was in the earlier bans

Sounds like there is little point in going to Victoria to climb now!

I haven’t been following the situation very closely... at the beginning it seemed like the reasons behind all these closures was quite spurious? Is this still/actually the case?

Or are there aboriginal peoples with actual problems with the way we as climbers use/interact with these places?

I feel that on the whole climbers are respectful. Though can imagine that whacking bolts into crags may still smack of colonialism?

Easy for me to not get too worked up by this as selfishly I have already visited the Grampians.

It’s a tragedy for climbers if we can’t find a way for our use of these spaces to co-exist and be respectful to the heritage of aboriginal people.
