Quarries in Derbyshire: BGS list
February 25, 2019, 08:18:12 pm
Thought this may be of interest to those interested in chasing esoterica - or geology - or the odd factlet thats in here about where stone from some quarries was used... It seems to be a BGS (British Geological Survey) spreadsheet/database of all quarries in Derbyshire. With grid refs.

Do they cover other areas? I spent some time trying to find info on a rumoured sandstone quarry near me but never had much luck.

Interesting comments re Bolehill (Lawrencefield) and Millstone Edge.

I'm fairly sure that Millstone Edge is a misnomer, and that it was from these much larger quarries that Derwent/Howden reserviours were built, and that the millstones mainly came from Bolehills (the much smaller quarries with all the millstones stacked up underneath!)

(that being said, I'm sure millstones were probably quarried at 'Millstone' before the much larger dam building project came along and upscaled the quarrying there)
