Help - what makes a good climbing film?
January 07, 2019, 02:51:26 pm
Afternoon UKB

What makes a great outdoor film for you? Every year, millions of hours of outdoor video content are created. But are brands, organisations, athletes and filmmakers actually making what you really want to watch...?

Take part in this big new BMC TV survey and let us know:

https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/OutdoorSurvey-P

It's pretty quick: about 5 - 10 minutes depending on how active in different outdoor sports you are.

In return, you'll help me get my masters and influence how the BMC makes films. Oh, and you could win £100 in Cotswold Outdoor / Snow + Rock vouchers.

Thanks everyone!

Alex.

Watch blocheads then set out to make something the opposite of this and you’ll probably be half way there

5. A pedant might point out indoor climbing is not an outdoor sport. I’ll let it slide as the alternative could have been x-treme sports.

9. Gender of film maker is unimportant on a film-by-film basis but I really enjoyed the BMC women’s films comp. entries which brought something fresh to the table. Is that contradictory?

17. None of these emotional responses. Need more possible reasons.

19. Depends on the brand of course

What I’d like to see less of: over-caffeinated sugary drink company, epic tv, cliches.

What I’d like to see more of: The Seaside part 2, women film-makers.

27. You missed out: ukbouldering.com

Many of these questions are about brands and sponsorship. I really value the lack of obtrusive marketing in the BMC TV efforts to date.

Can you just give Doylo some money to make West Coast Gimps Part II - 15 Years Later?

I don't really understand what is meant by 'the filmmaker' in question 9. What makes a good outdoor film for you?

By definition, the filmmaker makes the film... But I don't assume that films made by X filmmaker are good... So, not at all important?

Don't forget Ricky Bell's films (topsoff4power). Give those 3 some cash and let them loose. Pristine.

edit: And that mad dude from NZ in the dungarees, doing FAs at Castle Hill, anyone remember him?

Huge thanks to everyone who's taken part so far - great fun spotting the UKB responses coming through, especially in the comments field.

Keep them coming!

Just a bit of explanation, this is a two-birds-one-survey thing - combining getting suggestions for BMC TV with my masters dissertation

As anyone who's enjoyed doing a uni dissertation will know, it's all about linking it in to the current research. So the list of sports is based on the OIA definition of "outdoor sports" which includes outdoor sports that you can now do inside, like skiing, climbing. Likewise the emotions link in to previous research on sharing. So it's not always perfect but gives lots to analyse and talk about.

It's also not just about "films" but the general video that we produce, the how-to clips, all that...

There aren't any plans to commercialise BMC TV, but hopefully those questions will be of interest to other brands / organisations that get involved.

So, at the moment, going off the comments, the ideal UKB film is West Coast Gimps 2: The Seaside.

I'll add a UKB checkbox to the organisations and add everyone in who's added that so far.
