My bumbling shame...
September 23, 2004, 08:38:24 pm
I went to Wales today. Did I go bouldering? No! I went........scrambling

And I must say, it was awesome - an hours walk in to Llech Ddu and then a fine scramble up the ridge above (Crib Lem).

Raging wind, shit visability, greasy rock and only saw one other person all day. Could barely stand on the summit coz it was that windy and I even had to navigate down using map and compass coz you could only see 50ft

My red socks and gaiters are in the post...

Aye - I'm going to be doing some more I reckon - great for getting away from it all but not as boring as walking. Apparantly some of the harder scrambles in the Ashton book are terrifying.

Scrambling is fantastic.  I reckon it has a lot in common with bouldering as well - freedom of movement, no phaffing around with ropes etc.

Skye is the place to go - the Cuillin mountains are incredible.

All the closet scramblers are coming out now! Yeah, it is sort of like bouldering in that respect and it's just nice to be out in the mountains sometimes. It's a bit like Via Ferrata's without the Ferrata.

Shit, I'll be on a jaggedglobe alpine course next

Trying to get Sel interested in the Cuillin Ridge for next summer. I've been onto the ridge many years back and I agree, it's a stunning place.

Dirty bastard.

I am also an occasional scrambler, but I tend to restrict it to the class A variety - gill scrambling. Cue music from the Old Spice advert. Interesting fact; the Lakes word for scrambling is "scraffelling". Gorgeous.

Gill Scrambing - that's like reverse canyoning isn't it?

It sure is. Basically you find a nice scramble, now make sure that it has a river flowing down it, then do it. Hopefully with some waterfalls.

Scrambling's a lot more hard core than bouldering.  It's even dangerous!

You're just jealous of my new found alpine skillz....

Goredale scar? Purrleeez

On the downside, I've now really antagonised my injured foot, probably running back down the descent ridge. Perhaps I won't be doing that much of this sort of thing after all  :(

years ago i did loads of walking/backpacking/scrambling from ages 13-17ish. just as i started climbing i did crib goch in the most horrendous weather ever - 50mph winds, thick fog/rain. basically almost had to crawl along the entire thing cos it was too windy and scary to stand up properly. got to the trigpoint on the summit and had to poke fingers through the trigpoint d-rings to maintain a stnading position. crazy, and totally unenjoyalbe.

now i go bouldering.

Fairly often when I've gone to try some long mountain VD I've gone off route or failed to find the crag altogether and have ended up going up some combined scree slope loose rock death shute from hell, or find myself having another clinging to grass sods for my life experience, and if it wasn't raining there was a river flowing down the way I wanted to go.  With a blinking rucksack on, which usually got stuck or did it's level best to unbalance me.  It's safer climbing mid extremes.
