OK folks, here are the dates for this years Edge Bouldering League.
As ever, the comps take place on Friday evenings, with sessions at 1630 and 1900. The entry fee is still only a fiver, which is a bargain. Each round will consist of 20 quality problems from V0 to V9 in standard, with the emphasis being on fun! Prizes and freebies come courtesy of Five Ten, Arc'Teryx, Verve and Chaco. League winners will be decided from your best 3 results out of a potential 4, with some good prizes for the top 3 men and women.

Round 1 - Fri 26 November 2004
Round 2 - Fri 14 January 2005
Round 3 - Fri 25 February 2005
Round 4 - Fri 15 April 2005

More info can be found at www.sheffieldclimbing.com or you can give me a bell at The Edge on 01142758899

See you there!

Is this like a serious hardcore intimidating pro-thang, or at complete bumblies and HVS climbers allowed to join in??

No, no, Bumblies more than welcome. Problems harder than the foundry, getting up to about 7c in the top end (usually only 1 or 2 at that level). Bring your most devious and cunning stunts - you will need them.

Cough splutter. Differing definitions of fat weak punters there...

Well I might give it a try then.

Oh goody, I assume that Chef Bishton will be baking some exceedingly fine problems as usual then...

ned: Easyish to get to but harder to explain, maybe best get a taxi, ask for John Street near London Road.

Otherwise, follow the ring road around south-ish past lots of road works (100 yards from train station) keep following the ring road to the right as the A61 heads straight on (few hundred yards from roadworks), at the first main roundabout on said ring road (several hundred yards from splitting of A61), head left then take the second right, Edge is up there a few hundred yards.

Devious at the best of times, but these took cunning to an all new level. One of the most enjoyable indoor problems anywhere not actually using any real holds, just bits of volumes in a bladerunner/brave new world/thrutching/Heel slapping downright twisted little creation - excellent.

A good start to the series.

Yes yes. Good comp, good problems, lots of variety throughout the standards. Main problem was it got too warm. Otherwise it was good. A brush on a stick would be very useful. Amusing to see Percy relishing watching the suffering and contortions =).

I didn't enjoy as much as I could as my tactics were bad. Ran out of time (2 hours seems fine when you're halfway through but less so when there's 15 minutes to go) and got far too sweaty later on. Need to do the slopy problems earlier on and the positive ones later. But the problems felt pretty good otherwise. Didn't manage to get on the classy volumes one - the time thing again.

I'll keep going to these. The atmosphere wasn't intimidating at all.

It was a good comp, unlike any other I can think of - with all the problems being do-able, if you know the sequence right through, but you could fall off anything from problem 13 onwards no matter how strong you are, devious is the right word. The volume problems were excellent and those two straight ups on the flat wall in the corner were perfect examples of balance and technique over power, especially the 'undercut thumbs' match at the top   :)

Below is a link that should take you to the competition results page of the Edge's website. Round 2 was last Friday and very well attended with a lot of strong folks turning out. The second round was won by Gaz Parry (mens) and Katy Whittaker (womens). It was a particularly hard and varied set of problems, with contributions from Ian Vickers, Big Ron Fawcett and Rob Gawthorpe, as well as yours truly. In order to get a big score, you had to be good in all styles of bouldering - from vertical walls on tiny holds through to powerful moves on steep walls, to technical dynos, etc. Next round will be on Friday 23rd February.

final round was damn good, well done percy. The problems were as good as ever, but generally not as hard as in other rounds i thought. Any ideas when the the results will be online?

Results should be on the Edge site by Monday afternoon. Problems were easier for the final round 'cos I have got an injured hand and couldn't pull onto anything much harder than I set!  :injured:
