Watch the BBCs 2018 live on BBC Sport
July 05, 2018, 03:13:11 pm
www.thebmc.co.uk/watch-bbcs-2018-live-on-bbc-sport

The BMC is proud to announce that the BBCs 2018 will be broadcast live on Sunday 8 July and hosted on the BBC Sport website. Here's how to watch the livestream of it:

Climbing is in the Olympics, and now it’s even coming to your TV screens! That's because the BMC has arranged to have the British Bouldering Championships 2018 hosted on the BBC website. That’s right, the BBCs will be streaming LIVE on the Beeb by the BMC.

For the last two years, the BMC switched from creating a highlights reel to concentrate on delivering a high-quality livestream with expert commentary. Feedback from the two years has been excellent, so we're doing it again with the same local Sheffield company Technative and commentators.

In 2016, we managed to get the BBCs hashtag trending third on Twitter in the whole of the UK. This year, the hashtag to remember is '#BBCs2018' and there'll be more cash prizes for the best posts on social media that use it.

Zoe Spriggins, BMC competitions programme manager, said: “It’s fantastic that the BBC agreed to host our biggest national bouldering competition on its website. We’re hoping that everyone will get a chance to see the dynamism and determination of our amazing athletes on their screens and fall in love with bouldering and climbing in general.”

Alex Messenger, head of communication at the BMC said: “There’s a huge demand for livestreaming climbing events, and for several years we’ve been streaming the British Bouldering Championships. This year we hope to reach a whole new audience by working with our livestreaming partners Technative to send our footage to BBC Sport Live. This is the first time that BBC Sport has hosted a climbing livestream, so it’s very exciting for us, the competitors and the sport as a whole.”

How to watch the BBCs on BBC Sport

The BBCS 2018 will be featured on the BBC Sport Live Guide webpage with streams of Semi-Finals and Finals starting at 10:25 and 17:15, respectively, on Sunday  8 July.

Why should you watch the BBCs 2018?

For starters: anything can happen.
Both reigning champions are out of the competition and everyone will have their eyes on the crown. Former British champions Dave Barrans and Matt Cousins will be chomping at the bit to retake their titles, but they’ll have to fend off strong competition from Nathan Phillips as well as the rising stars of the GB Climbing Team.

Meanwhile, seasoned competition veteran Jen Wood will be aiming to make her mark. But nipping at her heels will be this year’s Junior British Bouldering Champion Hannah Slaney, who has the chance to come away with her second gold medal of the year. Nobody has won both the Junior and Senior championships since they became separate events – Hannah could make history this year in an incredible double whammy!

Cash prizes

If you’re at the BBCs, don’t forget to take lots of photos and share them on social media with the hashtag: #BBCs2018. There's two £50 cash prizes for the best photos on Saturday and Sunday, so get snapping.

15 BBCs for Dave Barrans

That's a mighty milestone: former British Champion Dave Barrans will be making his 15th appearance at the BBCs 2018. Will he be able to stand on top of the podium once again? Tune in to find out.

Thanks to:

The BMC would like to give a big thank you to everyone that has helped to make the BBCs happen again this year. Sheffield BID and The Outdoor City, all the routesetters – Jamie Cassidy, Rob Napier, Alex Fry, Ben West – and Beta Outdoor Sports who are providing holds from Lapis, Bleaustone, Captain Crux, Squadra, 23Holds, and X-Cult.

We'd also like to thank all the amazing volunteers that will be helping this weekend. It's no exaggeration to say that it would not be possible to run and organise the BBCs without them.

Sounds great. Good stuff.

Will it be available to watch later as well?

Excellent news - I'll check it out for sure (though I might just go in person again this year).

Good job there isn't another major sporting event clashing with it on Saturday at about 3pm eh?

Hi everyone

It's Sunday (semis and finals) only - so no clash on Saturday...

It'll be available to watch for 30 days afterwards on same URL and iPlayer

We're also hoping to run a stream to our YouTube.

Can this be watched from abroad, I presume so as it's not iPlayer?

On a separate note, isn't it about time Barrans was knighted or summat?

Cheers, thought so but on the results pic posted on twitter the highlighted (through to semis) section was pretty much indistinguishable so wanted to check.

Nope, the IFSC Lead from Villars was a bit later than that - and a great comp too.

Please tell me this will be streamed on Youtube or something, somehow??

Well that's annoying. I can only see the semi finals replay on the BBC website right now, and below that it tells me who won the finals. Grr!

Well done for trying something new, but if this is the BBC approach, Youtube is better.

Mostly worked from Langkawi on intermittent local wifi. Someone had to check!

I was a judge in the youth comp heats when Hannah was the only female to climb my problem (+ only two of the male juniors). She was really impressive... so no surprise with her result.

Required a vpn to get the semis stream replay to work in France.  Anyone had any luck finding a link to the finals stream replay on the bbc website?   can only see the semis available and don't want to risk clicking around the site too much in fear of the result been given away on there.

Stream worked perfectly for me and the whole event appeared to run very smoothly: well done to the organisers.

Men’s finals made good viewing, semis less so: all those identically dressed white blokes were hard to differentiate and the rapid cutting between different problems meant the commentary didn’t always keep up with what was on screen.

The wall didn’t give the setters a big variety of angles to work with which meant some problems looked a little same-y to the non-specialist viewer. The men’s 3 and 4 were the most successful and split the field well: very satisfyingly it all came down to the last two competitors on the last problem.

Some of the women’s problems seemed a bit too easy: there were a lot of flashes and not much tension.

  • Largely broken. Obsolete spares and scrap only.
    • The Boulder Bunker climbing centre
Mrs OMM cast it from her phone, though we missed the start due to a lunch thing; it seemed to go really well.

If we want to sell this to an “uneducated” audience, we need a big roof in there somewhere.

And, Gaz looked every inch the BBC sports presenter in that nice, blue, Oxford weave. Bouldering comp commentators in shirts! It is the end of days!

Can anyone confirm they have been able to watch a replay of the final. And if so, how?

I think the only people who saw it were tuning in live.  Can't find a link anywhere since the live stream finished and seen who won now anyway.  Will (optimistically?) wait for the youtube upload as youtube player has the j,k & l (10s skip) and cursor key (5s skip) functionality.

What are you wanting to skip? Thought you loved this pair of commentators?
