Swiss bouldering in spring/early summer
February 26, 2018, 10:15:45 pm
So I have an invite to visit a mate who has settled in northern Italy, near Lake Maggiore. Cresciano is about an hour away, Magic Wood two hours. Never been there before and don't know much about it, but does anyone have any recommendations as to where is best to visit for climbing up to about 6C-ish? I'm thinking of going at the very start of May, any idea of what temperatures and conditions could be like?

I went at the end of May in 2016  for a weekend to Magic Wood (one afternoon) and Chironico (a day and half) and had a brilliant time.

There’s loads of tree cover so even though it was warm it didn’t feel too hot to climb though there were some problems that would clearly be easier in cooler conditions.

Chironico has gazillions of problems in the 6 range and we barely scraped the surface.

It’s a really lovely place....

Gotthard Pass is ace as well, might still be too snowy in may though

Like FD says, Chironico would seem to fit your bill very well. In between Cresciano and Magic Wood so probably just over an hour from you. Lots to go at in the grade range you're after in a glorious setting. May be a little warm, but plenty of shady options due to tree cover and aspect etc.  The rock is more textured than Cresciano so more suited to the warmer weather. Be worth getting a guidebook as the climbing is spread through several areas up a hillside and is quite complex to navigate on first acquaintance.

We're having a very snowy Winter so far, so Magic Wood in early May could easily be inaccessible, as Gotthard pass.
Probably Chironico could be the best bet, in general it would be too hot, but maybe the snow factor will count.
Cresciano will probably be too hot already.
