BMC members can now access exclusive discounts on Montane clothing and equipment, after Montane becomes the BMC’s new recommended clothing and pack partner.

All BMC members can now access a discount of 15% on Montane clothing and equipment. To kickstart the partnership, this discount is available at an enhanced level of 20% until 14 November 2017, and up to 500 significant BMC volunteers are eligible for a permanent 20% discount.

British brand Montane specialises in engineering innovative and intelligently designed lightweight, breathable clothing and equipment specifically for climbers, hill walkers and trail runners, and has done so for nearly 25 years.

This exciting new partnership enables Montane to support our vital access, conservation, safety and youth work, by giving financial support at a time when government funding for sport is being reduced by recent changes to Sport England funding.

The partnership with Montane is part of a wider BMC strategy to work with new commercial partners to bridge this funding gap. Montane is our second strategic partner, and follows on from Cotswold Outdoor and Snow+Rock becoming the BMC’s recommended retail partners this August.

Jake Doxat, Managing Director of Montane says:

“We are excited to be selected as the recommended clothing and pack partner of the BMC. This partnership not only gives Montane a strong platform through which to engage with the British climbing and hill walking communities, but also allows us to play a role in the active support of vital grassroots work undertaken by the BMC to ensure the continued rights of access and conservation of our much-loved outdoor spaces as well as encouraging young people to challenge themselves in the outdoors.”

Dave Turnbull, BMC CEO added:

“We’re excited to welcome Montane on board as our recommended clothing and pack partner. Montane is an independent British brand with an established reputation. Their involvement not only enables the BMC to address a funding gap, but sees us gain an enthusiastic, relevant and innovative partner with a strong interest in climbing and hill walking across the UK. We look forward to working with them”.

How to access your Montane discounts

All BMC members will be emailed the exclusive Montane discount code, so please check your junk folders if you can't find it. This will give a discount of 20% until 14 November 2017 and then 15% for Montane products purchased through www.montane.co.uk. Up to 500 significant BMC volunteers will also be eligible for a permanent 20% discount.

Still surprised you're not targeting club members (like me) with some sort of upgrade-to-full-membership offer? Seems like such a potentially easy win. Maybe there aren't many of us?

Can you drop Alex a line with your thoughts on this as we are reviewing different categories of membership at the moment: alex@thebmc.co.uk

Off the top of my head there are around 25k club members, and there is a current scheme where you can upgrade to the full member benefits package: www.thebmc.co.uk/upgrade-your-club-membership

Looking at the age of the webpage, it hasn't been looked at in a while though and perhaps could do with a revisit. I'll mention it to the Pigeon when I'm next in.

Isn't affiliate membership the same as individual membership?

Was the Cotswold discount email ever sent out, Shark? Just searched my emails and didn't find it so wondering if I accidentally deleted it.

It didn't use to be. Full members got every issue of Summit but maybe club affiliate members only got 1 issue? I'm not sure if there were other benefits? TBH my membership card expired in March yet I've paid my CC subs, so I must still be an affiliate member? Who knows? From my experience there is little if any direct communications with affiliate members. I'm sure some of those 25k could be persuaded to upgrade. Given there's a potential £380K of revenue sat on the BMC's database it seems odd to me that we're basically ignored.

I'll raise it with Alex.

Thanks Tom.

Spoke with Alex.

We regularly run club upgrade campaigns via email. Last one was this summer: upgrade to full membership and we’ll give you GO outdoors vouchers, with all extra benefits of full membership explained. Run by email, as that’s best channel to target club members with. The result: out of 25,000 club members, 12 upgraded. This doesn’t mean it won’t work with some research but gives some indication of the level of demand

I don't think I've ever seen one of those emails, perhaps junked.

That poor rate of return suggests that email marketing doesn't work in this case. I don't accept that it's an indication of the level of demand. Why wouldn't people upgrade for the price of a round of drinks?

It strikes me this is a telesales job. The problem is for each upgrade there's not enough income to pay a salesperson commission. Get some volunteers trained up!

Probably because people would prefer a round of drinks  :)

Right, here's the outline offer we sent:

Upgrade your BMC membership

As a member of a BMC-affiliated club, we’d like to invite you to upgrade to full BMC individual membership at a discounted rate.

For just £15.20, you’ll get access to our full range of individual membership benefits:

The new 69-page members’ yearbook
£10,000 Personal Accident insurance – find out why this is important https://www.thebmc.co.uk/we-bet-you-didnt-know-about-bmc-personal-accident-cover

By upgrading to full membership, you’ll also be directly supporting the BMC's vital lobbying, access, conservation, safety and technical work.

Ummm... I’m a full member, but Emails get a quick glance and it’s off to trash; unless the tag line really grabs me.
Sorry.
I get hundreds everyday and by the time I’ve sorted the work/urgent/important ones out of the mess, real life intrudes and it’s on to something more important.

Clearly, UKB is on the important list...

I'm a full member and I've never got the email. Mind I emailed the BMC to give them my new address and they still sent my summit mag to the old address, so I'm sort of not surprised.

Well, that was an email only to club members. We're usually pretty good at updating Summit info, so sorry about that. If it's still an issue then email arun@thebmc.co.uk and he'll sort it for you.

People who don't read their emails probably don't answer their phone to unknown numbers either though.

Sorry.

Not sure who you're apologising to Matt. If you pay your subs but don't read the emails detailing the benfits then surely it's you that's missing out.

This is a situation I'm often faced with at work.

"I've heard nothing about this, your organisation's communication is terrible."
"Well we contacted you through the only method that you supplied us with."
"Sorry but I don't pay any attention to communication I'm sent."

Montane and BMC discount scheme: update

Montane and BMC discount scheme to change following feedback from BMC members and independent retailers.

This October, Montane became the BMC’s recommended clothing and pack partner. This new partnership enables Montane to support the BMC’s vital access, conservation, safety and youth work, by giving financial support at a time when government funding for sport is being reduced by changes to Sport England funding.

As part of the partnership, BMC members and volunteers could access discounts directly through Montane’s website. However, following feedback from retailers and BMC members, Montane has amended this benefit to further support British independent retailers.

Terry Stephenson, Head of Marketing at Montane, explains:

“In recent years, independent retailers have operated in an increasingly turbulent and crowded marketplace. Since 1993, Montane has been supported and nurtured by a network of UK independent retailers, so we have listened carefully to their concerns and have amended the scheme to support them.

“Montane is committed to our partnership with the BMC and we are still delighted to be recognised as their recommended clothing and pack partner, but discounted rates to BMC members or volunteers will come to an end at midnight on Sunday 12 November 2017. We would like to apologise for this withdrawal, but believe the revised scheme will better support a thriving and fair retail landscape in the UK – and we know the BMC membership will understand the importance of that.”

Montane is currently working with the BMC on a series of exciting new projects for 2018 and beyond, including supporting our Mountain Skills tepee at Keswick Mountain Festival and a series of BMC TV mountain skills films.
How to use your Montane discount

The current 20% off introductory offer at www.montane.co.uk will be available until midnight on Sunday 12 November 2017. After that date, Montane’s website will carry a list of Montane UK stockists offering BMC members direct discounts online and instore. Montane is also stocked by BMC recommended retailer Cotswold Outdoor.
