Injury help needed during trip!
April 10, 2017, 05:30:30 pm
Hi all,
I'm USA and can't get to a doctor or a physio, so would appreciate some opinions..
I'm in indian creek, I came off a thin hands/fingers crack and thought my hand was just cramped up (happens abit here)

3 days later, I still can't pick things up, can't make a fist and my palm is swollen and brusied below my pinky and ring. Sounds like a lumbricals issue, however I don't know how I could have torn the lumbricals by jamming!

5 days of the trip left and I was beginning to climb well after my creek spanking :(

Sure you haven't broken your hand?

I had something similar to that once where something popped and it hurt similar to yours, no swelling though. A few days later I laid my palm flat on table and pressed down and it popped again and pain went away immediately and it was fine?

I don't quite understand the mechanics of what you did. Come off = fall off? Did you fall off because it hurt or did it hurt after you fell. Do you recall hitting your hand?

Why can't you get to a Doctor?

Hi Duncan!
Doctor out here = $$$$$ not sure it's worth it when still inflamed?

I was on way rambo (I'm sure you know it), spent a long time in the reds and was resting on a right hand ringlock just before the top. (Pain is in left hand). Still pumped I started up the ringlocks but had zero pull in my left hand, so took. Zero pain other than cramp.
Left hand had only been used for thin hand jamming.

Back at the ground, the cramp didn't go, then the next day I woke up  it was swollen with a very light bruise in my palm. I still can't make a fist and cant pick up a full water bottle etc- it's had 2.5 days rest

Any thoughts?

You didn't get travel insurance, for a visit to a country where an accident might land you with a $100,000 bill? If so, I can see why you might be reluctant to seek medical help.

Except I do have travel insurance.
I just don't see the point handing over a $400-500 excess when it's still fully inflamed.

Coolio - that's a relief (I hoped / suspected that might be the case - given  the reputation of the USA).

You've injured your hand - hard to know unless it is examined properly what the exact issue is. You're reluctant to see someone in the US due to costs.  If you can't pick up a water bottle I suggest you completely rest it and get it checked in A&E/x-ray to clear any potential fracture on your imminent return to the UK (if that is your plan?).  If no fracture then pay and see a physio.  What exactly is it you're wanting advice on? Bruising and swelling = tissue damage. No quick fix. Unlikely muscle (but might be) more likely ligament or may be a fracture.

Thanks sheavi!
Mostly wanted to see if anyone else had any experience of something similar. I know a bit about hands and it's usual, especially for what I was doing  when it happened.

I can now pick stuff up a little easier but making fist still hurts

Does anyone know a way round paying insurance excess for a scan?

Went to the hospital as it got more painful. No broken bones on the x-ray.
They have suggested an MRI when back home, if it hasn't eased off by then

Sheavi is right on this one at this stage you just gotta wait! Time is only thing that's going to make this better, no quick fix. Too soon to be talking about MRIs won't change anything.

Cool no fracture.  No need for MRI scan currently.  Just mobilise as able - everyday use will help washing dressing, eating etc.  Don't push too soon!  Soft tissue injuries can take quite some time to heal.  As an 'educated' guess it sounds ligamentous i.e. deep transverse metacarpal ligaments or volar plates.

Sorry for the slow response, I'm in Spain.

I've nothing to add to what sheavi and Nibile have said.

Moose - my insurance only wanted a £150 excess which is great news. USA docs received 1500 $ for an x-ray and a bandage.

If anyone is interested it's ligament damage with a 4-6 week recovery time. Hallamshire physio think it's a really weird injury for what I was doing

First very light climbing session tonight, will know tomorrow if I've pushed it too hard!

Ive now been injured 11 months and counting  :'(
