Omnium is my current favourite word. Omnium omnium omnium omnium.

Personally think the equestrian stuff should be dropped, so shit to watch and the olympics is meant to be about human performance not how well someone's pet has been trained. they'd have dog trials if all the toffs were into it

Agree. I did think golf should be binned too. Until we got Gold. And Justin Rose seems like a decent guy. For a golfer.

Some jaw dropping performances.  Adam Peaty miles ahead and smashing his own world record. Mo winning the 10km after falling, must now be up there with the greatest distance runners ever. Bolt having a poor start and then coming through the field to become one of the greatest ever (if he wasn't already). Wayne van Niekerk at 17 smashing the 400m world record that has stood for 15 years all from lane 8.

These are just some things I have watched, I'm sure there are others as well.

Overall the performances seem to be the highlight of the games as the venues and crowds seem, from watching on TV, to be distinctly average after London and Beijing.

I'm not a huge golf fan - and thought it'd be wank in the olympics... But it's been really good.

Not sure we need ALL the different sailing classes...

Judo confuses me - and as a spectacle is like two pissed people grappling with each other - until one falls over and then wins, earning a thingywotsitshugi.

The horse stuff is interesting. I think the horse disco is bonkers, but it's probably harder to train both yourself, and the animal, and to get the two to work together... So in terms of skill etc.. I don't think it's such a cop out.

Some of the cycling seems a bit much.. But as we win lots in it great :)

Fantastic to see those two Irish fella's - compared to the Oxford/Cambridge japes amongst the GB 4's/8's...

Judo confuses me

Apparently the most dropped and reinstated event in the games. Mrs used to be/is very good at it so we went to see it at the commonwealth games. Didn't have a clue, unwatchable unless you know what's going on. But if you're into it, you're into it.

Trampolining, anyone?

it's been pointed out that trampolining requires the strength, flexibility and coordination of diving and gymnastics and isn't just something kids do in the back garden.  Apparently I should have watched some of it before dismissing it thus.

I did watch the trampolining and it looks as hard and is a impressive as any other gymnastics discipline (except the rhythmic, which is a bit shit) . They seem to take a as long getting to their height as they do doing the actual routine, which only seems to last for a few seconds.

The omnium is still confusing as hell, but great to watch. Who keeps track of how many laps they have all done, are they chipped or something?

Actually we went to rhythmic at the CG too and it also requires all the same elements. My eldest was quite keen on trying it but as it also requires the ability to throw and catch she'd be struggling a bit.

Thats because a routine is only 10 moves/bounces, you'd be hard pushed to get to your top height in such a short number of jumps.

I used to do trampolining, was great fun, but there can be nasty accidents, girl at our school broke her neck and was in a back brace.  Saw someone miss the trampoline completely and their spotter landing on the hard sports-hall floor, they fractured their hip and broke their forearm.

Does the 10 include the warmup?

Apparently one of the girls in the olympics (from Belarus?) came close to flying off.

Not as grim as the vaulter's broken leg, or the weight lifter's elbow collapsing.

If by warmup you mean just bouncing straight up and down, no, you can bounce up and down to get your height and happy with your position before commencing your routine, they don't count.  There is a set routine everyone does and then a second routine of the competitors own choice, but it shouldn't repeat any moves.

I had to spot someone once who's opening move was a triple straight somersault with double twist on exit, before he got on he said to me "If I'm coming towards you there's nothing you'll be able to do so just get out of the way.".  Commitment :o

Sounds like some of the spotting on routes I've done.

Good insight thanks. It amazed me how quickly they can kill the bouncing at the end of the routine, is this part of scoring?

When performing the routine both feet have to contact the trampoline simultaneously otherwise you lose style points.  At the end you have to finish with both feet on the bed and be in an upright position for three seconds so in essence yes, you have to control the finish.

Most farcical event so far - Saw some of the 3m springboard diving yesterday and it became almost a lottery as the gusting wind was so strong at times it was almost blowing the divers back over the board and ruining dives, both the reigning world champion and the reigning Olympic champion were victims, doubt the  architect responsible for the open-air pool design will be getting many Christmas cards from the teams.

Most unexpectedly enjoyed sport - water polo - previously had no idea how much of a contact sport it is

Oddest moment - doing a double take when randomly watching women's archery after spotting a Ukrainian lass who looked a lot like Hazel Findlay

I was looking at that very thing this morning, makes for interesting reading.

I think this one is more representative, seeing the medal table is laid out according to most gold, not most medals, otherwise China would be ahead of GB.

http://www.medalspercapita.com/#golds-per-capita:2016

This made for interesting reading too;

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2016/aug/15/brutal-but-effective-why-team-gb-is-winning-so-many-olympic-medals

As they say, seems a bit cutthroat, but seems to be working.
