Climbing around Vienna
June 11, 2016, 05:36:12 pm
Can anybody recommend sport climbing areas around Vienna / lower Austria or any good online resources? Preferably with a mix of very easy to ~8a. Have seen some promising looking stuff in the Wachau area, anybody been around here?

Cheers

I think there is some (search threads as I asked the same a couple of years back) - but I recommend the BoulderBar as the best wall in Vienna. Really good vibe. (Bouldering only)

Cheers tomtom, that was useful. This seems like a good resource https://www.thecrag.com/climbing/austria/wien-vienna-area/area/345293106.

Anyone know if there is a recent guide for the Wachau area?

About 5 years ago, I spent a couple of afternoons at Kletterhalle Wien (https://www.kletterhallewien.at/) which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I've a friend who lives in Vienna and do quite a lot of climbing around there, check out his blog ( http://www.haukkari.net ) for some pics and description of the local climbing.

There's lots of climbing around Vienna. The Wachau area is nice but it's often too hot in summer. You can often find topos on bergsteigen.com (you can also type the name of the crag + topo into google). This is a popular crag at Dürrnstein, Wachau http://www.bergsteigen.com/klettergarten/niederoesterreich/wachau-waldviertel/nasenwand it's baking hot in the sun though.

Another area you might like is Adlitzgräben ( http://www.bergsteigen.com/sites/default/files/topos/616_Topo_0539f704-a4e0-42ca-ada1-de3e8d8ef871_ADLZGRBN.pdf ). It's a huge area with something like 200 or 300 routes. 5a - 8c+. Not as hot as Dürrnstein in summer but still not ideal. You could get the Höllental Guide ( http://www.thomasbehm.at/hoellenthal.htm ). Höllental is beautiful and there's an endless choice of crags scattered throughout the valley. I think the guide is available at freytag & berndt, a book shop in the first district of Vienna.
