Stoopid question

Sorry for the stupid question, but what is the origins of the term 'wad' - as popularly used in these here parts?  Searches in the likes of Urban Dictionary reveal somewhat different connotations.  And as for waddage' -  :o

Wad as in a wad of cash, as in someone rich and hence successful.

P.s. I think it started as a North Wales '80s slang for someone with cash, or at least that's how it's used in Paul Pritchard's Deep Play book.
