Transport (Getting around) in Font
February 13, 2010, 03:51:41 pm
Me and the girlfriend have booked up to stay at MaisonBleau in April.
The thing is....I can take a car if I really want to but I love the idea of getting everywhere on foot assuming its only a few miles walk/hike, I had a quick look on the map and it looks like about 3 miles to walk into Fontainebleau, which we both think is perfectly acceptable, am I crazy trying to do this without a car?
Is it a lot longer to walk than I am thinking?
Do we need to rely on buses/cars to get around?
I'd love to do this without any vehicular transport if possible, what do you guys think?

I think what Jim was trying to say was yes you'll need a car. More than a quick look at the map would have told you that it's about 30mins from Buthiers (near maisonbleau) to Fontainebleau by car. I think you may have underestimated and under-researched this one!

yes, sorry.
You would be crazy to go without a car, especially staying at maisonbleau

You could just train on Neil's board and drink a lot of red wine/eat pain au chocolat all day though  ;)

Thanks for the advice guys, I am pretty new to bouldering (in case you hadn't guessed), and I was thinking I would have been happy with anything up to an hours walk/hike, but 30 minutes by car is probably going to equate to a couple of hours walking I imagine, so I guess the car is a necessity then, shame....c'est la vie.

You can happily get to Buthiers but for the rest (and to experience the best) of Font you'll want a car. Plus you'll probably want to stock up on food at the big carrefour near Melun.

Driving in and around the forest is a joy

watch out for deer, boar hunts and the occasional speed camera that looks distinctly like a junction box.

Oh god...I am well aware of France and their "stealth" speed camera's, the activist groups who try to make life difficult for them are damn hilarious too!

Deers and Boar eh, that should be interesting   ;)

If you're new to Font its also worth pointing out that its not often wise to leave your belongings while you nip around the corner to try that next line (especially given you'll obviously have some photography stuff with you). Be careful about what you leave in your car as well.

I think those who always drive tend to overestimate walking times.
To give you an idea I often go without a car (staying in Fontainebleau rather than Buthiers mind) &
Cuisiniere  is about an hour on foot with a sack & pad.

If you've got to walk along a road though, rather than through the forest it's very slow going.

I've been asked by a friend of a friend for advice on climbing in Font. They're staying in the town itself and won't have a car. It's as part of a European trip from the states so I doubt there's much leeway on this.

I've only been once and I had a car and didn't stay in the town. Can anyone help me with what to tell them please?

https://bleau.info/map

A few areas within walking distance of town centre. Not sure if they are any good though.

Must be busses, but no idea of frequency / routes.

Mont Ussy and Mont Aigu are the best options, depending on exactly where they are.

Surely wouldn't be hard to hitch down to Cuvier and back.
And if your friend is a monster then Rocher de Bouligny is walking distance and has plenty of 8's to go at

Rochar D'Avon and Bouligny are not far.

also, might be worth hiring bikes?

and joining a few relevant forums which might have people with transport who are climbing in the area

Yeah sorry tc/ JamesD- I revived an ancient thread rather than start a new one.
