Escape the heat
July 22, 2016, 02:24:44 pm
In this heat I'm struggling for inspiration, so apart from high Lakeland and Welsh boulders (probably the best bet), does anyone have any other bright ideas? Or something that's dry that isn't usually? I was thinking about heading to the Churnet tomorrow (Peakstone Inn Amphitheatre) but temps look really high down there. Anywhere within striking distance of the Peak. I have a whole day, so could travel. Forest Rock?!

Wouldn't be surprised if Odin's was condensed.
Have been to FR a few times recently and have had a good time on hot humid days every time. There's limited choice when the cave bit is wet but not a problem for a first time visitor. Enchantress and Heathen Chemistry are outstanding. Bring a kneepad and as many pads as you can carry (might as well the walk in is shorter than the Tor!). Plenty of vids online if you want beta.

Cheers Bonjoy. Watched some of them and it looks like my cup of tea.

I went to Odin's late last June with Dave in similar connies to what we have now and it was a bit damp and grim.

For once, that isn't an issue as the family are in Ibiza whilst I'm not in Peru :-\

Forest can condense badly if temp spikes. No idea what its like atm.

As far as I could tell this only affects problems right of Sorceress. For Tom this means at worst he will only be able to try Heathen Chemistry of the good harder probs. One brilliant 7c+ is worth the trip though. Wrote some detailed connies (and climbing) beta on the FR conditions thread yesterday.

Windmill Hill is a shady north-facer, just up the road and has a couple of good problems too. And probably less prone to condensation. Park on the main road - I saw a car in the car park that had been broken into when I went.

If there's a breeze, Blackstone will get it. If there isn't, don't go. Worth checking out Mike's vid of new problems if you are looking for stuff 7B and up. Hero Sitstart (in vimeo pic) is the best of these I think. (Mike makes it look straightforward but bear in mind only tall people will be able to reach the slopers with feet still at the bottom.)

I'm at forest rock now. Everything left of anti hero is dry.  Everything else is condensed. Heathen chemistry, enchantress and magician should all stay dry I'd expect.

Windmill Hill will be dry. Could also add in Cademan Woods to complete a nice if esoteric circuit.

Churnet would be a good shout too. Peakstone Inn or Farley Woods are good summer venues,  plenty of shade and overhanging rock that doesn't get affected much by the sun.

Been to both Forest Rock and some Churnet stuff the last few days. FR was in pretty good condition and has loads to go at. Churnet was a hot humid mess last weekend but was great today and yesterday, did stuff on the propellerhead boulder yesterday evening and conditions were surprisingly mint after about 5! Was pretty warm over at the amphitheatre today but not too much of an issue, still able to try some harder stuff (apart from swimming over the top of Mirf's Roof felt about 7B)
