Yeah we definitely have further to drive for rock, but having a vehicle permanently set up with the climbing/ cooking / sleeping stuff is awesome. Sleeping on a real bed rather than the ground has made a big difference to me also.

In dating all the above I'd probably have a big car rather than a van if I lived closer to rock that I wanted to climb on

But you've got a proper sized van haven't you? Small vans and rain are like sitting in a car for extended periods of time. I once camped in font with a fiat Punto and a '2 man' tent. I spent most of that miserable week sat inside the darn Punto; grim.

(more on topic, I've owned the 400mm f/5.6l and though it was outstanding and extremely light for it's size!)

the back of our van is rammed with furniture though (and there are three of us), so isn't spacious. a berlingo is plenty big enough to make a comfortable seating/chilling/sleeping area. (used to have a berlingo through work so abused it for trips a bit)

we too have had the crap wet camping in font experience. came home with a spine like a letter c
