Llanberis pass bouldering
April 24, 2017, 09:46:47 am
I'm going to be passing through north wales next weekend for non climbing related reasons but I think there is a good chance I'll be able to escape off by myself and get some bouldering done. I've been recommended King of Drunks in the pass as something worth a look and videos look amazing! I don't have the guidebook though, does anyone know if it is easy to find or have advice of how to find it? Or any other recommendations at a similar grade? Parking seems easy enough to locate from UKC. Might also be on the Orme although likely not with much time. Might check out pill box original, which I don't think will be too hard to locate.

The hardest problem in the Pass is getting Parked. Get there early.

Not if you're a member of the CC :ang:

(King of Drunks isn't that easy to find, nor is it that difficult. If you head to Utopia (big boulder with vert east facing wall) 3 mins up and right of Ynys Ettws hut, then head 3 mins pretty much directly up the fell side behind you will arrive. Or, if you have mapping its grid reference is SH 62149 56596).

Grimer's guide might be a good investment. The French glossary is especially fine, IMO, although the N Wales bit isn't bad either...

If you can't get parked in the pass. I thought The Pinch or Kingdom of Rain round at The Sheep Pen in Ogwen are equally as good as KoD, at roughly the same grade.

I'll be climbing in the pass (weather dependent) this weekend, probably trad but maybe some blocs too.  If you see a silver van parked at Ynys Ettws then we're quite likely to be up on the wavelength hillside.  KoD doesn't have a great landing if you're on your todd as there's a boulder kinda behind it, however the other stuff to the L on the same bloc is all good.

The landing is fine when going solo, I've never hit that block and I've fallen off the top a lot...

The rocks bad for Wavelength but fine for KoD.

The other option is Parisella's, never been but keen to check it out and get spanked.

If you have the option to go to either the mountains or the cave, always pick the mountains.

^^this. Whilst the Cave of righteous justiceness is a place of high reverence, I'd always choose the mountains... Sorry cave.. :/

Thanks for the info guys! Was easy to find with grid reference and excellent problem! Got the last parking space when I turned up as well, so very successful.

Your 'Chris Bonnington's cast-offs' rack should get you honourary membership. In fact I think I've seen your steel WWII biners on the wall of Etwys
