Wouldn't you know it gas combi-boiler broken.  :boohoo:
Need a replacement boiler ASAP hopefully before Christmas.
Just wondering if anybody has had a new boiler fitted recently?
If so, what type of boiler did you get?

we had a new boiler fitted in summer. We got a Vaillant as when the missus used to work for a Pipework/Plumbing company her boss reckoned these were the best.
It has worked really well, you can hardley hear it and the gas bill is now cheaper.

Thanks Webbo!
It's not really the Christmas present that I wanted!
But need a bit of occasional heat and hot water!

Did you get your system flushed?
Or put on a "filter?"

In June we got one of these bad boys:
http://www.worcester-bosch.co.uk/homeowner/boilers/gas-boilers/greenstar-34cdi-classic

With a wireless thermostat so you can carry it around / place it where you want

We had the system flushed, but with a chemical for a week or so and then something else, not a power flush.
Got a filter on it.

It's a ton better than the last weak pile of turd we had, is very quiet.
Wasn't silly money either

We've got a smaller version of the above, the 30Si Compact. It's great for a 2 person household with low mains pressure. Virtually silent.

We also got the Hive remote control system - not essential but I use it a lot.

The old boiler and the system was only 2 years old when we replaced the boiler. The bodger who renovated the house before we bought it  didn't put a filter on the system and the boiler wasn't powerful enough for the underfloor heating. We have a remote thermostat as well.

The boiler in my flat is dying (leaking Heat Exchanger, which will cost almost as much to replace as a new one...maybe) but I was wondering - is it possible to do it DIY and pay a gas safe "engineer" to approve it?

See the 2nd question here: http://www.hse.gov.uk/gas/landlords/safetycheckswhocan.htm

So, that's a no.

However, you can just do the work yourself if you're "competent".

From another forum:

Quote
It not illegal to do DIY work on a gas boiler.
It is illegal to take payment for work on gas if you are not gas safe registered.
You can work on a gas system if you do not take payment but you must be a "competent person".

If you blew up the house I suspect you'd have trouble proving that you were "competent" unless you had relevant qualifications.

I "un-condemned" our boiler a while ago when it was cold and I was skint. Found the part, fitted it myself and the boiler ran fine until we had it replaced. However it was just the transformer so an easy fix.

I've decided to take this one the chin and let a "pro"  do it.

Wocester Bosch generally come out best in the Which reports.

Some less good brands incentivise plumbers to use their products

They are also by far the dearest. Just saying, you get what you pay for with them.

I was looking at Vaillant - 7yr warranty and not too pricey ( a good chunk less than a Worcester). I will not be getting another shoddy Ideal Isar!!!

Fultonious, sorry to hear about boiler, a right pain in the arse.
In the end got Worcester boiler.
Yes, it was expensive but plan to live here for a while.
Don't know set up regarding your flat.
Have a look online as prices vary.

It's been great so far, very quiet and saving money.
Plus long guarantee, fit magnetic thingy to system to prolong life.

Brother had cheap boiler ended up breaking within a year or two.
Think you probably get what you pay for.
Like you said get pro to do the fit.

Hope this helps.

Cheers folks, I'm probably going to sell that flat (not sure whether that will be soon, or not so soon), but I'd still rather not saddle the tenants/new owners with a sup par boiler for the sake of a few hundred quid.
