California in a Van this Xmas
November 10, 2015, 03:12:04 pm
Hi, Does anyone have any experience of Camper Van hire in California?
Planning to hire one over Christmas till New year, about 3 wks.

One of the hire companies say they are drained for winter, no toilet or shower, so essentially a bed and a cooker. Trying to weigh up is it worth it for the convenience.

Plan to be in Bishop and Yosemite and tour round a bit... can you get a van up the buttermilk rd? I remember it being pretty rutted?

I need to rent a car or a van but trying to work out is saving $40 - 50 a night accommodation and be able to cook a meal worth it the extra cost and lower MPG's over 2500miles.

Any advice or experiences gratefully received.

I rented a van from these guys last fall. http://www.lostcampersusa.com/  They're based in Salt Lake, Los Angeles and San Fran.

Worked out great for me, cheap and no issues.

Yes you can get a van up buttermilk road.  It probably won't get up to Dale's Camp, but otherwise you should be fine.

Thanks for the replies and also the offer of a van, I think logistics would be better to hire one from a company in SF, thankyou though.

Do you know if the Pit is still available for use in Bishop, i haven't been for 10 years so wondered if the situation may have changed since.

It was open this time last year. I'm not aware of there being any changes since.
