The First List
September 09, 2015, 03:04:27 pm
Okay, climbing-pub quiz question of the week: everyone knows the first font 6a in the world was La Marie Rose at Bas Cuvier but i was wondering what the firsts of all the other grades are? From 6a to 8c+. Any suggestions?

I thought the first 6A was at Robin's Hood Stride? Says so on the wiki somewhere, I'm sure :-/

OK, what was it?

It was at an obscure South Lakes limestone venue, no witnesses. I've never really been one for publicity. Can't you just say I did it pls...

OK, did you cycle there and were spotted by a passing Spaniard?

(it's a wiki, you can add in whatever you want!)

Oh i forgot to say, I wasn't belayed by someone in Dai Koyamada's entourage and Chris Doyle filmed some attempts and cut together a video and it looked like I'd done it. I like to climb at 6 in the morning..

6!
Lazy bugger!
I'm usually 3 x 9a's in the bag and back home for tea and toast by then.

Then I wake up.

First 6b should be the descent from the Marie Rose boulder. Chimney of death and terror.

I'm sure I've said this on here before, but I had to get a mate to get a rope to get me down from that boulder the first time I topped anything on it. It was that level of humiliation or the prospect of what seemed like certain death in my scared mind in the heat of the midday sun

am i the only one that loves that descent?! stick a pad at the bottom before you start, bridge across and jump, great fun. There's normally an abundance of pads under that climb anyway
