Outdoor swimming near Font
July 09, 2015, 11:12:01 am
I'm running a campaign to get my girlfriend to come to Font in September/October. It'd be a bit plus if I could guarantee a nice place to go swimming that's not a swimming pool or water park. A bit of online research hasn't shown up any possibilities yet but the Seine and Loing are both nearby. Is there any swimming to be done thereabouts or are the rivers too polluted? Any other spots people have come across?

The river (Loing) near the camping les pres site (http://www.camping-grez-fontainebleau.info/) was nice for a dip when I was there a few years ago (here: http://goo.gl/aZRoh3).

I went for a nice long swim in the Seine at Thomery a couple of years ago ... lucky its wide as there were some bloody big barges coming down it. No ill-effects but I was very careful not to swallow any water. The current was quite strong too. The owners of the gite told us they swam there but another local seeing me get out clearly thought I was a bit odd.

I also swam in the Loing somewhere a bit south of Moret-sur-Loing. There were nice shallows and obvious deeper bits, a nice bank to get in from, lots of locals swimming - seemed very clean and safe. It was next to a town but I'm not sure which one as I'd got there by kayak rather than road. We hired the kayak from a place in Moret; makes a nice day but would they still be open in the autumn?

I swim here every year and it seems fine to me, just ignore (liike everyone else in town) the big sign that says 'no swimming'. If you ask the owner of the Pres, she or he will happily point out other spots. I recall that my sister took the kids up to Moret-sur-loing when I was out climbing.

Swimming in rivers near Font is in Seine.
Sorry.

Don't worry, I don't plan to stay in Loing.

Thanks for those suggestions. Sounds like a few good options are available. I'll look into staying over that side of the forest for easy access.

Isn't there some kind of outdoor lido / pool thing - used to be mentioned in the old OTE guidebook?

I'm pretty sure I went there one year when it was boiling hot and it was very busy / good.

there used to be a lido near the train station in Avon

closed now, I think

I used to stay at the then cheap Terminus hotel near there for unplanned raids to Font in the '90s - true story

Unless your GF like screaming kids, I'd avoid Buthiers pool or its likely to be your last visit to Font.

She doesn't and me less. Will give that one a miss.
