Sika gone wrong
July 05, 2015, 10:36:35 am
glued back on my starting holds at dogs dinner on Thursday, made sure it was all dry and brushed clean of dust ect ect. went back last night and all around the holds it was seeping out from the sika and when i pulled on it hard it just popped off the wall in a clean sweep. it had a good amount of surface area to contact maybe 10cmx15cm. I assume i've just tried to glue it back onto a seepage point and its just got wet and formed a layer between the glue and the wall, it was really damp to the touch where the hold had been. Annoyingly there's no cracks to give sign that it was a seepage point its just coming out of the wall itself.
Anyone got any ideas as to what i can do?

What did you use? It might have been out of date? Did you give the rock and the hold a good scrub with a wire brush?

What time Thursday did you glue it? The Tor and Blackwell were ruined with condensation Thursday eve due to thunderstorms in the afternoon. Imagine Cheedale was bad too so might have affected i going off?

There is an Evo-stick product called "Wet Grab" which has out-performed Sika for me in marine applications, where it has been impossible to dry out prior to gluing. Have also used it underwater on one occasion.

It was really good conditions on thursday when i glued it. I didn't  brush it with a wire brush, but gave it a really good brushing and scraped with the back of my brush. The hold also. This aqua glue sounds interesting. Where can i order it from online?

What was the name of the product you used? Did you mix it together in the correct proportions? Did the glue on your rag/trowel go off? Questions questions???

This is the stuff I've been using to put the Churnet back together. Never had any problems, not sure if its better or worse than sika. Only downside was the price of the gun  :jaw:

Possibly not as good as Fischer, mind...

Whatever you do don't use flexible no nails type stuff used for skirting boards and diy jobs. Fishsher stuff is great and they also sell it for use with standard wide co-axial applicators. screwfix and Toolstation £10 each so rainbow was stung getting their industrial applicator.

This is what the BMC has supplied to various bolt funds. Cost effective as well.

If it's the vinyl ester I gave you it is two month out of date ( I did mention), but I used some of the same batch last week without bother, I wouldn't risk it for bolting mind. I suspect you might not have had enough catalyst in the mix. You do need to discard the first few squirts because one side of the tube tends to start discharging before the other. Try testing it at home. If it is slow to set try adding extra catalyst.

Yea was that stuff jon. The stuff on the spatula and in the mixing tub set rock solid so don't  think thats the problem i'll  probably try again but the hold is gonna be a good 2-3mm bigger now due to having two layers of glue. Oh well

Yea the sika bonded with the hold but not the wall and popped off in one clean piece. The glue is as hard as rock so it had definatly set. Gonna try to different glue tmrw. Maybe

You need to wire brush the area you're sticking it too.

I've got some of these which are quite neat for this kind of thing...

rather than the rather brutal normal wooden ones.

The strongest glue in the world won't stick to a dusty surface. This is why squirting glue behind loose flakes is rarely very long lasting. Both surfaces need a thorough clean.

One tip that can help is to drill a few small holes into the area behind the hold. Make sure the glue fills the holes.

Had a look today Haydn.
There is definetly an unsatisfactory amount of glue on that undercut. There should have been signs of it ouseing out of the bottom, yet I could see a significant amount of cavitiy. That hold is going to be subject to tremendous outward forces.
I suggest you trowel in a large dollop of resin into the underside of the hold and force as much jizz as you can up the cavity. Only leave as much room as you need for your fingers on the hold. You can afford to make it a lot smaller. The best bit is no one will see the mess you may make as it will be hidden from standing height.

Thankyou KC that sounds like a really good idea will do that hopefully this week. its a real shame as its now probably only font 7C not 8A due to changes to the undercut (now having a thumb catch so really good pinch). Makes the first move and the next move surprisingly easier.

So now you can fill it in and make it as had as you want.
