Earl Crag conditions?
October 28, 2011, 10:45:21 pm
Anyone been over that way recently?

With it being north facing was wondering if the green had come? Haven't been in years and keen for a mooch.

Went to Caley up around crags and is was very damp green, condensation etc, not ideal.
Thabks for any info.

Caley was very damp last weekend, Oct 22nd didn't want to put anyone off this weekend if it has dried out at all.

Does anyone local have an idea whether it will be dry up there tomorrow (Sunday)? Thanks.

What chance of Earl being dry?

For future reference, does it dry fast like most grit crags, or stay damp for a while after wet weather?

I've not been for ages but it's north facing so I can't imagine it's that quick drying.

Like a lot of grit, it depends on the wind.

Its quite a long crag. Bits are quick drying - typically the shorter sections where the problems are near the top of the escarpment (eg the brilliant Handy Andy's area, though the problem itself can be a bit green in the back). The big bits of the crag where the problems are at the base or in gullies can be prone to green and damp. Common sense really...

Anybody know how Earl is looking? Lager, lager, lager/Handy Andy's/Desert Island Arete/Sloping Beauty in particular.
Thanks!

From another thread a few days ago:

A. few days off work to climb and I go and roll my ankle at Earl on the first of them. Oh well, at least I got Handy Andy's done first.

With the current combo of fog and stillness I wouldn't bank on good nick at Earl, or anywhere high and shady. I'm guessing today is going to be a typical autumn/winter high pressure windless days which looks like all sunshine and fluffy clouds on the weather map but is actually muchos log for grit. Hope I'm wrong!

Can anybody hazard a guess at how long it will take Earl to dry at the moment? Obviously it's raining and will continue to rain but, with a bit of wind, is there any chance of it being dry any time soon after the rain stops?

You may want to reread that question, quite a lot of hypotheticals!  Some bits of Earl Dry quite quickly, other bits are some of the slowest drying bits of grit in Yorkshire.  Given that the entire of Airedale is essentially underwater at the moment, and looks to remain so tomorrow, and for the rest of this week, I wouldn't be holding my breath! http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/forecast/silsden-west-yorkshire#?tab=fiveDay&fcTime=1388361600

If it is underwater I would definitely be holding my breath!

It was amazing on Tuesday Eve. Everything that I saw was dry, the ground was nice and hard so you didn't get caked in mud when you step out of your car. There was a little breeze too. Perfect!

Should be fine tomorrow, dry and sunny nearby this evening, looks like it could be quite still though, so may be worth taking some midge spray, there are a few about already.

Aren't dry conditions the bane of climbing at Earl? I thought conditions were best after a long downpour

It lashed out down today but it's been windy and bright this afternoon. Probably fine
