Sounds like another system that the gov is 'improving' to save a few quid, but will result in a load of hassle for everyone.

I've stopped taking the paper part abroad with me - as I've never been asked for it in the last 8-10 years... so I don't think it'll make much difference...

That is technically the case. But I have never been asked - or refused car hire for not having one.

Hired in Spain, France, Italy, USA, SA...

Not hired in the UK though (where I have to show my licence that is - its all done through work etc..)

I've never had to show my paper licence either, I've also hired a lot of cars all over

Paper part in UK so they can see your convictions as far as I'm aware. At least that's the excuse they give for always asking me at carnold lark
