Well, I went to the MCC for the first and last time yesterday and someone said that The Depot will be opening in Manchester this summer.  shit I might have to actually get some indoor climbing done so I can crank out the 4+ when it comes to the real thing.

Trafford park. Not centre. Which is from memory a big industrial area (some of it empty/wasteland) loosely between old Trafford and the M60 (or Trafford centre)... Suspect they've found a decent sized industrial unit/building..

Maybe if someone more in the know could let a postcode slip out...???

I imagine it will be in the industrial park on the other side of the Bridgewater canal opposite Old Trafford, which is the route I use to cycle home (which I don't do very often )

As long as it's covered - it's be great... Also Means you can have a tab in between efforts

Went last year to a bouldering wall in Vienna (Boulderbar) that had an outdoor section (under a roof) - it was really good on a warm evening, better than the hot inside...

30000 ft is 100 by 300 - yes a wee bit less than 1/2 a footy pitch.. That's quite big!

I think adapting the indoor skydiving place next to the Centre d'traffordium would work better... even I might be able to do a one armer with a 50mph updraft

The photos on FB look very encouraging, but it's hard to tell what level of general readiness is for paying punters?

I agree, the photos look amazing but new boulders seem to still be arriving, nothing is painted, their are no mats and none of the "extras", cafe, shop? etc seem to be started so I can't see it being finished much before Christmas?

It'll be ace to finally have a decent bouldering wall and closer to my house than Logport.

Went yesterday, very impressive. Loads of space, big walls, cool angles, some amazing new holds and despite being very busy there was no queues for problems. Gripes? More locker space would be nice, but apart from that, about as close to perfection as I've seen in a bouldering wall. Well done Mr Dunning et al.

Agreed. Traffic will need careful planning from myself but I thought it was fantastic and I'm usually picky with walls. Good setting. Really good panel finish which seems to be a rarity these days. Nice holds (rough but brand new).  A good mix of people showed up too which made for a good opening day.

There are still some pullup and dip bars to go in I've been told.

Sinks in the gents seemed designed for midgets but that really is me being uber picky!

Re traffic - worth remembering that if Man U are playing at home (as they were yesterday) there will be 70000 people coming and going from near the area for 60-90 min before and after the game...

Agree with the above comments. Some amazing holds on the easier problems but they are rough. Never really thought about the board finish before but its true...

As a soul and disco boy the music was proper bo all the time I was there.

TT's right about the traffic. If Utd are at home it'll be mental about 1.5 hours before and after the game. The The Tragic Centre should start calming down now. I've been doing that drive for years now so I'll try and post my patented traffic avoidance jibs.

A few of us went for a burger afterwards at GBK in the Trafford centre. It took 40 mins from leaving the depot to park! Serious traffic error!

There's a newish DAV wall here half a mile from the Bayern Munich stadium. Same problem with traffic & parking on match days, plus the home fans have discovered the bar at the wall.

First time last night. Apart from putting a hole in my futuras (I thought no edge "technology" was going to make this a thing of the past.....) putting a dampner on things:

Wow, everything I wanted form a bouldering wall and more. Massive space, loads of great angles, tall walls (I was struggling at 2/3rds height on everything) variety of good holds and imaginative setting.

Now all I need to do is actually turn up there regularly!

Cheers Chris. I can't quite work out how we'll cope with two. Obviously it's possible as plenty of people do, it just seems like it's going to be a lot of hard work! It's bad enough at the moment as my wife has gone into full "nesting mode" so I'm spending all my time building flat pack furniture, digging out bottles/babygrows/moses baskets etc. and having to tidy all my climbing stuff away and store it in the loft.

It is brilliant. Manchester has been crying out for a facility like this. Rockover was an opportunity missed but the Depot is on the money. If only I wasn't a chubby punter.......

Yup - I'd rather be climbing outdoors. But when there's a top notch wall 15 min away - it makes that 'maybe ok weather in the peak but it's an hour away' decision fall more towards the wall.

Well done Depot. Had an awkward hiatus period in Manchester that looked a lot like a Depot-shaped visit. Not disappointed. That places is LARGE. Lots to do and lots at my current sub-punter range with some thoughtful problems. Great selection of holds and big volume/hold crossovers with lots of facets. I bet they're a decent investment but a statement about doing things well.

I agree. I like the attention to detail with the setting too (like little screw ons for moving your feet between larger holds, matching the finish etc.).

I have an overnight stopover in Manchester coming up, do you guys recommend the Depot over Rockover? I like the vibe at Rockover. Had some good chats with the guys behind te counter but sounds like the Depot needs to be experienced, right?
