2014: what are you proud of?
December 25, 2014, 06:21:22 pm
It's been an intense year, and I'm proud of many things:
- I took work quite seriously and put my brain back to some serious work;
- I lived climbing in a better, healthier way, both physically and mentally;
- I stopped being scared by what will be in the future between me and the girlfriend;
- I somehow managed to build some kind of good relationship with my father;
- I studied more than 9.400 pages since spring to prepare to the most important exam of my life, then I went there and gave my best (fingers crossed it was enough);

I'm also not proud of a few things:
- I'm not economically independent (Italy is hopeless);
- I spent the little money I had to buy two motorbikes (I'm an idiot);
- I still can't find common ground with my mother.

Anyone else wants to share?

Good stuff- I deleted my Facebook account, gave up coffee, went to Font for the first time, got considerably better at my job, got regular paid djing gigs locally, lost weight and gained strength at bouldering, performed my best man duties at my best friends wedding with aplomb, ran my first half marathon in a respectful time, bough an Audi.

Bad stuff- Haven't managed to find a Mrs unfortunately, and haven't done any work on my house. Developed a troublesome knee issue which I'm having an MRI scan on in the new year.

Overall I am happy with the way 2014 panned out. Merry Christmas one and all.

Proud: Remaining suitably intolerant of shoddy climbing ethics, and fighting against it in word and action.

Not proud: Not getting organised to get abroad this year since January.

Getting a bunch of British blokes to talk about stuff like this might be difficult, but I'm going to take the plunge:

I embraced the possibility of a fantastic new relationship and so far haven't messed it up (far from it in fact).

And I met Nibile. Seriously, it was a pleasure to share that coffee with you in Siena!

Taking the work life balance plunge and moving to 50% time.

There are hundreds of things I'm not proud of - but I am proud that I try (and generally do) act and learn from these things...

proud of, living alone and being able to afford it. getting a girl whos not rotting my mind. meeting new lots of new friends. peoples reactions when they see their wedding photos.

not proud of, putting on a stone and a half, not making enough effort with my photography business, anyone getting married? not being able to bring about world peace.

Started a family, so there is now a fun wee fella to keep us busy.
Finally realising what was wrong with my fingers so they are on the mend.
Bought, refurbished, then let a flat as part of operation "don't have a pension yet, better do something "
Bought an old van (thanks Andy ) to facilitate getting away with the wee fella
Edit: forgot about the biff invite :)

Finally got sorted with a career that I'm interested in. Working random jobs for years was getting to me abit, just had no direction. Really enjoying what I'm doing now, part of a good crew with a well respected company. Pleased.

The year for me has been all same old same old apart from taking up bouldering. Having a random thought that left me wondering where it came from and actually following it up, especially when it's a big leap into an unknown and facing my fears is odd for me so I'm quite proud of myself for that. Not proud about still being in the same employment situation as this time last year like but if everything went well for me I'd be wondering when all the bad stuff was going to show up anyway.

Proud of my partner Selina for learning to walk again (albeit slowly so far) after a massive stroke almost killed her in July.

I was gonna post something, but anything I've done is trivial at the side of this.

Good arrows.

Bought and did up a house in time for our little one's arrival. Carried on climbing until 7 months pregnant, started climbing 2 weeks after he was born. Really enjoying being parents and we seem to be pretty good at it so far!

Not proud of how annoyed I get by my mother in law, even though 90% of what she says is completely inoffensive.

Mike, a very long way still to go, but that has to be great news.

Well done to both of you, and wishing you both the very best xx

Selina will be very proud of you too, I'm sure.

Proud of my partner Selina for learning to walk again (albeit slowly so far) after a massive stroke almost killed her in July.

Mike Cleverdon had a massive hit a couple of years back. While setting and/or climbing too. It looked pretty hopeless for him at the time.

He's back climbing as hard as ever and setting damn fine Blocs. Never know anything had happened.

Always hope, the human body/mind seems to cope with amazing things, when needed.

Right to be proud, my dad is up and about now and his eyesight is coming back slowly. All the best for 2015 to you both.

Best wishes to your partner and you Mike. I'm a great believer in the human capacity to repair and rebuild. I wish you both the best.

I've managed to sneak a date in today with an absolutely beautiful and smart lady today, so maybe there are good things on the horizon for 2015. I am grinning like a village idiot!

Bon effort Selina.

I fixed my shoulders.

After climbing outside loads this year and not doing the right antagonist exercises I developed rounded shoulders and limited shoulder mobility - couldnt do wall slides  well for instance.

After researching the issue further (this helped loads) I used yoga to increase my mobility and develop awareness of correct body position and weights to strengthen the stabilizers - (specifically for me the serratus anterior, rotary cuff, rear deltoids, rhomboids and lower back).

Combined with changing my computer setup at work and at home as well as sleeping more on my back, I can now say I have reasonably healthy shoulders and normal shoulder posture, which seems to be surprisingly rare in climbers.

I really should see someone and get them to show me those Serratus Anterior exercises. I seem to get a very fatigued feeling at the base of my right shoulder blade after training and had a few issues last year where lifting my right arm I was 'cheating' and using anything other than the correct movement patterns.

Great article, thanks.

On this thread, proud of:
Standing up to people (way above me) and telling them they can't do/say what they're intending as they're yet to prove it, and what they actually do need to do to get there.
Being valued enough that they heeded this and now they're 'there'. Turns out I'm actually fairly valued in my team as a whole which baffles me given my general feelings towards work.

not proud of:
Still not trying hard enough at climbing. Other people try much much harder than I whereas I prefer to yield to fear of injurt or other such excuses. Poor form.

Good thread...

Proud of:

Getting a new job; giving up smoking; getting below 14 stone for Font; winning the inaugural UKB fishing match; learning to fly fish; staying mainly uninjured; my wife for finally climbing 6a outdoors and getting thoroughly psyched on climbing generally, all whilst dealing with persistent vertigo attacks for most of the year!

Not proud of:

Not managing to keep below 14 stone; still being a bit shit with money (I'm nearly 40 ffs); pretending I'd given up smoking for three months earlier in the year!

Bring on 2015!

Nice work Selina.

Proud of?

Daughter graduating with a First (84 in her Dissertation). Her brother announced he's getting married next year... my kids are doing okay.
Taking the plunge myself and deciding to head off to Spain in October this year.
Buying a buy-to-let with my old business partner.
Still got no TV in the house.
Best Man for the fourth time - must do something right when it comes to friendship.
Staying single. I'm way more content this way. Non of the mad highs of being in love but peace of mind and contentment more than make up for it.
Managed to do 2 pullups in the Beastmaker mono pockets - greatest sporting achievement ever when you can't do any more even on a bar!

Not proud of?

Put a lot of weight on, like 7kg-ish. I could say I'm turning 50 this year but that'd be a pathetic excuse. The one I like to use is training heavy  :ras:
