Anyone else sketch/paint/doodle?
November 27, 2014, 10:25:33 pm
Having fun with Art Studio on the iPad. Much less hassle the a real Airbrush, but I still can't get to a point beyond comic book art and still avoiding faces...

But Doodled Alex P this Arvo at work. Based it on a couple of googled photos as she wasn't available to model. 😞

Love it. Nicely done and captures the poochs style

Should the hair be more straight down though?

Yeah, rotated the image a little to sit better on the page. Would'nt have been able to do that with a "real" painting. Didn't think about...

Come on, there must another amateur scribbler out there?

I draw and sketch buildings still post architecture career. Was really proud of my final design project even if I did have to redraw an entire year's worth of work after a hard drive failure  :'(

I'd like to do some metal work sculpture at some point in time although making leather goods is becoming a current interest. Need to get less off my plate not more dammit!!

Not a bad sketch, although I was looking forward to a picture of the pooch in a life model style.

I used to draw and paint a lot, then stopped dead in my mid twenties. I still get the odd hankering to draw sometimes but haven't moved past that yet...

I'd like to do some metal work sculpture at some point in time although making leather goods is becoming a current interest. Need to get less off my plate not more dammit!!

I'm currently a sheet metal worker/welder and whilst most of my days are spent banging out ductwork and welding up stainless sinks tables and whatnots I do try and do a bit of after hours creative metalwork. My latest creation being a cooling loop from an old freeze drying unit that I've converted into  radiator, very 1950's copper/steel architectural thingummy, which I really like. And upcycling, I'm like so of the moment...
(My main underlying message is standard metalwork is mathematically cool, but creative stuff is double cool, get welding boy)

I was the only member of my uni climbing club who studied arts. I had a couple of very small exhibitions in London that were well received (but ultimately led nowhere). I keep thinking that I'd like to get back to doing some stuff, but I don't know if I want or can go back to the place where the good stuff came from.

Yeah, at 18 I had offers from Falmouth to study Fine Art or Loughborough and Camborne to study Geology/Mining Engineering.
The pressure of choosing between 3 very different lives, proved too much.

So I ran away, literally, joined the Royal Navy and became a Marine Engineer.

Given three options, always choose the fourth.

Go for it. It's not important. Nothing hangs on it.

My childhood friend, Dave Young, and I grew up building dioramas and painting, sketching etc. he took it all the way and is now a successful illustrator (does lots of magazine covers etc).
But plenty of my classmates ended up working in Halfords/Tescos/ a.n.other...

My first ever serious arts teacher advised me to make sure I didn't have any friends that studied the subject. Good advice for many things.

Iteration.

And

Reiteration.

I'm attempting to sketch from my own imagination, without any photographic or life cues.

Thought I'd record the process.

Started by laying out a scene, just trying to put as many lines in approximately the right place as possible.

Then start to narrow it down to the "best fit" and start to consider the shadows.

Then slowly add layers of detail and shade...

And realise the perspective is wrong on the left arm/ leg and on and on...

Come on, someone else must have doodle or two to share?

What are the acceptable limits of "paint"? ;)

Definitely hard to give any realism to the coloration on an iPad.
I've cranked it up to the maximum pixels, but it's still blocky.

Wasn't meant to be, but if you find it erotic....

After playing around...

I agreed with Jasper.

It's going to take a lot more work to produce anything major on the iPad. It's just too hard to get the perspective/proportions right, as to make any detail I need to zoom in tight. I then get carried away on one little bit and when I zoom out it doesn't quite fit with the whole.

More practice.

Still I think I've got the basis for my next poster.

The ability play around with the image on the Pad is pretty useful.

I used to draw a lot as a child/youth, of course just with pen or pencil. Never used techy stuff, it's been ages now since when I last drew something besides random stuff on the corners of book pages!

I like the first sketch with just the lines.

I like the one before the final product, with maybe a bit more definition in the face. I've always liked art, but have no drawing talent whatsoever, so I take photos instead.

Great thread! Don't know why I haven't looked. at this until now. I watched a program a while ago about David Hockney who did an exhibition of work he'd done on the iPad, some really good stuff!
I used to paint and draw loads when I was younger but like a lot of people it falls off the radar when life gets in the way, and other hobbies. I might post an example or two if I'm feeling brave...
I was never very good but loved it, proper escapism, I wanted to be an artist when I was a kid, but unfortunately it doesn't exactly pay a salary..
