recommendation for good external mic for dslr
December 08, 2014, 10:59:58 am
As the title says really, after a mic that can cope with a bit of wind / background noise for shooting interviews at the crag when I want to place the camera a bit further away for DoF purposes.
I know about the rode videomic, I'm after alternatives if poss..
Thanks!

have you looked at a Zoom H1 ?

I don't think you can mount it on top of the camera, but you do have the option of using it as a stand-alone recorder (not sure if it works as an external mike linked to the camera?)

I assume it would work OK with a dead cat over it

At first glance I thought I'd have to use it as a separate recorder and sync which I'd prefer to avoid, but it seems you can plug straight in.
This makes it much more attractive.
Have you used / got one? any first hand experience? reviews look good...

I have a Videomic Pro and would highly recommend it. The +20db switch is a killer feature if your plugging it into a DSLR, removes that horrible hissing sound you get when boosting the levels in camera. Definitely worth the money.

Here's a comparison with the Zoom H1 in camera:

Hi JC, thanks for the link, interesting comparison, there's definitely a difference, although I fear my budget won't stretch that far unfortunately, hard to justify the cost for this one project, good knowledge though, thank you.

There is a sennheiser alternative shotgun. Will try and find later
