Low grade Slovenia / Croatia?
July 05, 2010, 02:54:12 pm

Heading on a 2 week roadtrip down through Slovenia to Croatia in a few weeks.

Not climbed for ages but due to recently losing a lot of weight, am keen to get started again.

Wondering if there's any real bumbly bouldering (and possibly sport) around Bohinj/Triglav in Slovenia and halfway down Croatia, say near Zadar and the inland national parks.

I'm sure I've seen mention of sport climbing at Plitvice National Park. No idea or grades or how much there is though.

went to slovenia last year with a bunch of cavers -- so yes, there's plenty of good bimbly sport climbing. Bouldering seemed more limited.

I'd be more helpful but i feel like a nap. there's guides n shit, some stuff online i think

When you're less tired, any links would be appreciated - not found much solid info online...

I'm guessing you'll have found these already (and they're a bit pricey), but...

Rock Climbing Atlas South Eastern Europe : Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Macedonia, Romania, Slovenia

Croatia Climbing Guide : Istra, Velebit, Dalmacija, Jadranski Otoci, Zagreb and Okolica

rrampicare Senza Frontier - 25 climbing areas in the hinterland of Trieste - extending across Italy, Slovenia and Croatia - over 2000 routes on excellent rock.

There is also an out of print Slovenia guide...

Slovenia Sports Climbing

...and some very scant info here (mentions that in Bled majority are 6a-7b and "Kamnik offers a good selection of routes in the lower grades from 4 to 5c+ (French grades)").

Cheers Slacks - was being tight and trying to avoid actually buying a guide since it'll probably only be a small part of the trip. So much to do down there and cram it all into 2 weeks...

Aye, thought that might be the case, could try sourcing a second hand copy though, if no one comes up with any here, could try the For Sale/Wanted section of UKC.

Just had a cursory search on Fleabay and it led to here, but not much info on where the crags are/route info/anything useful really.

So i can't find owt online right now

the pass heading south into the national park and towards Bovec is amazing driving/views. If you keep heading towards Bovec you pass a few sport venues, the best we thought being Trenta. It's just the far side of a rockfall-tunnel section(if ur driving south). The climbing is on crag sized boulders visible from the road. there's a wee bit of half decent bouldering there too so if you've got a mat...

There was some decent stuff down south as well. Two or three people, sheffielders, had the guide, so i know there's some knocking about sheffield. You could ask on ukcaving...

Slovenia Sports Climbing

Never checked the link, but this page leads to here where there is at least maps with crag locations and the number of routes at different grades listed.

Me and my Mrs actually popped our sport cherry in and around Bled/Bonhinj

We ended up going with a company based in Bled as we didn't have ropes with us - but there was huge amounts to climb there. Friendly people, good guide picking routes right for our level
From memory, there are 2 "adventure sports" companies operating out of Bled, can't remember the name of the company we went with, possibly "Lifetrek", but they had an outdoor, undercover training area. The guide was called Borat if that helps...

We were on 4s and 5s but there was pretty much everything on offer.

Bled is beautiful (if you ignore the shopping mall they stuck in the town).

Anyone else been here recently and checked out the punter end of the sport climbing?

Contemplating a visit in late June. Not sure how well I'll be climbing given current injuries, anything between 5b and 7b (very optimistic). Definitely not concerned about good red-point conditions but will it be unfeasabily warm?

I am off there in a week and a half with two relatively new finger injuries so will report back here what I manage to find on the punter end of the scale... I'm going to the Osp area of Slovenia

I was in the region in June last year - pretty warm in Bohinj (and frankly, not amazing climbing). I much preferred Paklenica for friction/quality of rock. We were there in November, so no idea of connies in June.

Can post you the guidebook for Paklenica if you want.
