Dr. Topo RIP - A big blow for free info
July 08, 2010, 04:06:15 pm
Forgive me, for I'm off the pace a little here as what I'm posting about actually transpired about 6 months ago, but I've just noticed that drtopo.com has gone off line permanently.

I just thought this was worth a heads-up as I have not seen any mention of it in the UK media and this is a great loss to the climbing community as a whole not just state side, as lets face it plenty of us go to the US. I have used Alex's guides a number of times and have found them very useful, especially when I've ended up in an area I didn't expect to go, i.e. on road trips etc. The effort Alex and Antoine put in was immense, and for that they should be thanked no end. I had the fortune to spend a week in their company back in 2004/5, and they were gents through and through. Thanks guys.

I can't believe this hasn't been reported anywhere (sorry if it has), I'm mean when you compare a continents worth of FREE climbing info vanishing for good with such news as Leah Crane climbing a new 7c in Albarracin, it's laughable! Whatever happened to investigative journalism, anyway I digress apologies...

Alex's reasons are worth a read - http://www.drtopo.com/

I did mention it within another thread. Agree it's a major blow. Still get all the info though, if you use that clever internet archive thing, Slackers knows how.

I noticed this a few months back, but figured that since the available topos were still, well available, it wasn't a great loss but did mean that there wouldn't be any further development which would have been a shame.

Can't comment on the uesfulness/quality of the guides/topos as I've never had to use them (and I can't remember why I came across the site and notification that it was no longer active now).

Not in this instance, but the topos that were submitted are linked from the above page.

Last time I looked all the old topos weren't available. Good they are now though. Not sure for how much longer though?

Actually, looking through that list, it's only a tiny proportion of what there used to be available.

Looking through what i have downloaded before, for example there used to be 7 topos for Arizona alone, and loads of others that aren't there anymore.

Seems a shame really.  I used a few of these topos on a trip last year.  Although they're not the greatest, they are free.  Maybe a few of the newer bouldering guides have come out and people don't need them anymore.

Don't think so, loads of the topos on there were areas too small and/or remote to be included in a published guide.

Yeah  :agree: but many of the Utah crags are covered in the newer (black cover) guide, with another guide out in the near future so I'm told.  This will probably include the latest developments in St George/Moe's valley etc.  As for Arizona the guides for Priest Draw/Howard Draw (which I think used to be available through Dr Topo?) can be bought in Flagstaff at the local climbing gym.

You can also download some shiny ones for Priest Draw etc. Oddly out of curiousity I just googled "Topo for Priest Draw" and a link came up for the old Dr Topo site, where you could still download it.
