I like Claude Young live too.  A risk taker, I would say.
Definitely - scratches, chops, spins and just general mayhem. Just had the knack of sending the crowd off. Saw him at the Orbit one NYE and he actually got through a whole bottle of whiskey during his set!  Shook his hand over the decks at Sankeys - nice guy :)

You mean the DJ Kicks CD?
Yeah - it's not bad, it's just nothing like his live stuff.

Rok (www.dj-rok.de) is a lot more uncompromising live though.  Quite nasty.
Sounds good, I'll try to find some Rok sets.

Squarepusher - "Hello Everything" (Warp)
New album from Tom Jenkinson. A bit more melodic than a lot of his stuff with the usual mix of live instruments and electronics.

Quote from: The Guardian
For this, his 10th album in as many years, Tom "Squarepusher" Jenkinson is in playful mood. He has said Hello Everything is him "having a laugh" after recording several albums that were, at times, frustrating and difficult listens. This new CD may divide his fans - which include Andre 3000, Thom Yorke and Flea - as some prefer his material to sound more like a drum kit and a bag of cats being kicked down a flight of stairs. On the other hand, others will be glad to hear an album brimming with tunes. Dazzling chord progressions override fiendishly intricate beats as Jenkinson combines the elation of rave with the complexity of jazz. Theme from Sprite positively twinkles with melody and the pacey Hello Meow combines chiming xylophones and virtuoso bass playing. It is not all a ball - Vacuum Garden is six minutes of beatless ambience that ebbs, flows and spooks - but, for the most part, this is Squarepusher on full beam and Hello Everything is a thing of unbridled joy.

Have a listen at http://squarepusher.net/

Aye Bubba, tis amazing. Seen him live a few times including the London Sinfonietta/Warp collaboration which was the best musical event I've ever seen.

If you get the chance DO NOT miss him and book your ticket early as he frequently exceeds capacity.

Bubba, have you heard the Square Window mini CD that came with some copies of Ultravisitor?

Nearly caught him live last time he was in Sheffield, but missed it :(

No, not heard that mini-CD, I've just got the regular Ultravisitor - is it worth seeking out?

Tis indeed worth seeking out. Some favoured it over the actual album. God I love that man

Right then Unc'.  Get yer 'earin' gear round this:

Berlins' Pacou has kindly offered a lovely little 25min mix.  Pretty representative of his sound, my only regret is that it isn't 8 times longer and comes with free drugs.  www.pacou.de

Oooh...  (whistful homesick emoticon)  Dirty Berlin techno...  Excuse me while I wipe a tear from my eye...  (Hope this link works)

IMNVHO the Swedes and Krauts do it the best.

Good to see these German recommendations flowing thick and fast. Magda is playing in Liverfool tomorrow which would be a wise venture for anyone inclined. Think I'm off to it. There is a fucking big warehouse party all-night too in the vicinty which is an open invite. If anyone wants to know owt, drop me a line.
I believe a big canister of laughing gas is being supplied too for anyone who likes laughing.

lately I've been listening to the following albums, all of which have left me in various states of musical ecstacy:

...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead - first album from '98
I'm slightly gutted that I've only just discovered them. A friend of mine used to rave about them, but I never checked them out until recently.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...And_You_Will_Know_Us_by_the_Trail_of_Dead

Guided by Voices - Universal Truths and Cycles
Possibly my favourite band of all time. I can also strongly recommend Alien Lanes, Mag Earwig, Bee Thousand. Even Do the Collapse which many fans saw as a disappointingly commercial album is light years ahead of what any of those tedious NME bands (The Killers/Razorlight/Kasabian/Franz Ferdinand etc) have ever achieved.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guided_By_Voices

Paul Westerberg/Grandpaboy - Stereo/Mono
Ex lead singer of The Replacements, very prolific, and thus quite confusing if you don't know where to start. I'd recommend the Grandpaboy - Mono disc from this split album. I can't stop playing it. If you're curious about The Replacements, then Let it be is the album to get.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Replacements

Also got hold of that Neutral Milk Hotel album following a rec on this thread. It's pretty cool and I'm sure it'll grow on me (I only got it this morning).

The new Bonnie Prince Billy album (The letting go), mentioned by Uncle a few weeks back has been a regular player of late. Very fine, up there with his best material IMO.

I forgot to mention:

American Music Club - Everclear
The production is a little strange, but this is still a remarkable album.

Cofe, a couple of listens in and I'm completely hooked. :dance1: A brilliant lo-fi mash up just about every great modern American band (Violent Femmes, Mercury Rev, Flaming Lips, Pixies, Pavement...etc).

I can't praise it highly enough.

Knew you'd be hooked. It's one of those albums I can listen full through and then stick back on from the start.
Watch out though Panto, you'll find yourself singing 'I LOVE YOU JEESUS CH_RIIIST, JESUS CHRIST I LOVE YOU, YES I DOOOO' in public

New 57min OVR mix available from titans of UK minimal techno James Ruskin & Regis in the audio section of Ruskins' site www.blueprintrecords.net/

Occassionally abstract, yet rude and at times soulful.  Takes a mo to get into the swing of things - enjoy.

If you don't have Ruskins' 2nd artist CD on Tresor Point 2 from 2000, do yourself a favour.

Just picked up Bongos Bleeps and Baselines by Zero Db after reading a random review somewhere - it's awesome. Latin beats with a whole lot of extras added in and to make the whole experience that little bit better it comes in what can only be described as the most faff inducing CD case ever.

Tuomas Rantanen:  Industrial strength techno from Finland.

Live @ Vuoltsu 26/10/06

Dark, percussive, fast and frightening.  Hmmmm...  It's not for girls, and if it is, you wouldn't want to meet them.

Run to The Dark my pretties...

Tuomas Rantanen:  Industrial strength techno from Finland.

Here's Rantanens' homepage (for those few - if any - that would like to know or hear more from this member of the Finnish obliterati).

".... a bunch of angry guys pouring frustration, protest and hate messages out of their horns. That's not the message these kids want to hear. Life is a dance. If man isn't dancing I'm worried."

Charles Lloyd, 1967

Techno music is a very universal language which can create the original relationship to the world. It is a language which can in a very radical way set questions that involve our relationship to the environment, tradition and for instance to new technology, and the question, which concerns the manner of our being in the world.

Tuomas Rantanen
