At the moment I am very much liking In The Aeroplane Over The Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel
Amazing in a tuneful yet weird way. Inspired lyrics like:
Quote
Two headed boy
Put on sunday shoes
And dance round the room to accordion keys
With the needle that sings in your heart
Catching signals that sound in the dark
Catching signals that sound in the dark
We will take off our clothes
And they'll be placing fingers through the notches in your spine

Quote
Your father made fetuses
With flesh licking ladies
While you and your mother
Were asleep in the trailer park
Thunderous sparks from the dark of the stadiums
The music and medicine you needed for comforting
So make all your fat fleshy fingers to moving
And pluck all your silly strings
And bend all your notes for me
Soft silly music is meaningful magical
The movements were beautiful
All in your ovaries
All of them milking with green fleshy flowers
While powerful pistons were sugary sweet machines
Smelling of semen all under the garden
Was all you were needing when you still believed in me
Genious

Mountain Goats did a cover of Two Headed Boy and it is most excellent. Anything that comes out of john darnielle's mouth (including excrement) is genius.

Quite why nobody else has posted this is beyond me, but Bonnie Prince Billy has released a new album entitled The Letting Go. Although I haven't even finished listening to it, I can without any doubt say it's wonderful. It is somewhat lighter than his other albums, in a musical sense it is less dark. Those familiar with Superwolf will know what I am alluding to. Please, if you like music, buy this album. It comes with a bonus cd too featuring different versions of previous songs. Yes, Bonnie Prince Billy ranks very highly amongst my musical loves, and you should love him too.

Two headed boy

I was wondering where you got such a bizarre name for a problem from.

Good call Bubba, I did like that. And well done to Uncle for shining a light on the twisted genius that is Will Oldham. I have a few of his earlier records, but need to catch up on the recent material, in fact I'm off to order my copy of The Letting Go right now.

My favourite band at the moment is the Drive by Truckers, check out their latest album: A Blessing and a Curse

http://www.myspace.com/drivebytruckers

The Dirty South album is amazing too, but I think I've said that on here before.

Let's keep it heavy with one of the best grindcore bands the UK ever shat out.   Carcass

One for Bonjoy:   B O L T   T H R O W E R !!

You legend. Have a wad point for mentioning both of those. Impeccable taste in grindcore, two of my favourite bands since I first heard tracks of John Peel.

One of the earliest gigs I went to, as a school kid, was Bolt Thrower at The Marquee (?) in London - went on a Saturday night, my ears finally stopped ringing some time on Wednesday...

Anyway, that's reminded me that I really need to re-buy some early metal stuff on CD (all on cassette at the moment). Since there is bugger all being released in the DNB scene now is as good a time as any!

Enough with the whatever-core already.

On a gentler note, I'm currently enjoying:
A C&W version of "Killing in the name", by four half-brothers from Normandy;
http://www.myspace.com/lamaisontellier

French Gypsy-Jazz/Swing/Tzigane stuff:
http://www.poumtchack.com/

And some nostalgic trancy bits and pieces from Banco de Gaia (How Much Reality Can You Take? being a particular favourite)

In keeping the balance between folk and techno, I downloaded this set this morning. So for those who are into their techno, sometimes hard, sometimes smooth, sometimes sexy, sometimes dirty, always good... then download this fine set and get your dance on;

Just a little gift from me to you - because I care!

TODD - Butlers' Portion. (From the Purity Pledge LP)   I can't think directly but the mp3 is there on the right hand side.  Enjoy!

and one from me to you http://myspace.com/narcosisgrind not totally my thing, but amazing tight technical grind from Liverpool. Speaking of Carcass, have you heard Jeff Walker's country album?

This month, I have been mostly listening to:

Sikth: After seeing them live in Leeds it's made me want to hear more of them. I only have two tracks, but I'll probably buy The Trees Have Died And Dried Out Waiting For Something Wild soon.

Youth Movie Soundtrack Strategies: http://www.myspace.com/youthmovies
A very cool band, I can't really describe them, but they're very good indeed, especially the track "the Pitch And Yaw Of Satellites"

65daysofstatic:

Oh my god!

How awesome can you get? Epic. Sheer mind-blowing epicness...

Glassjaw: I've listened to Worship and Tribute in the past but I only got around to getting it (i.e. finding it cheap) recently and it's very good indeed.

Back with the proper fresh and funky beats i.e. hip-hop. Finally got some new stuff, just ordered:

Swollen Members - Black Magic - http://www.juno.co.uk/ppps/products/235198-01.htm

Not as relentlessly awesome nor as consistent as their excellent Balance nor Bad Dreams albums (which any head should own), but still some very good stuff on here with usual strong beats.

Phi Life Cypher - Playback - http://www.juno.co.uk/ppps/products/232219-01.htm

Never really tried the Phi before but this collection of various collaboration tracks and unreleased tunes comes across pretty well to me. Some good beats and upfront rapping. Check.

I've just spent 10 days in Northern Spain and NW Ireland on a perfect.. perfect... perfect surf trip (Photo's to come on another thread) and listened to some new CD's in the car and van.

The Early Years: Nice one JB and Panto.. I like this a lot.  As well as the Neu! it reminded me a bit of Joy Division and Jesus and Mary Chain.

Another shout for the new Bonnie Prince Billy - much better than Master and Everyone.. really, really good.  Recorded in Iceland with a string quartet it brings out another subtle change to his repertoire.

Dubstep All Stars Vol 4: Mixed by Hatcha and Youngsta.. More mad beats and stuff, a cleaner more digital sound than Vol 3.

Head Like a Kite: Random Portraits.  Don't bother... it's a bit rubbish IMHO despite the rave reviews on the cover sticker and in some magazines - trying a bit too hard.

The Soledad Brothers: Hardest Walk.  Detroit garage rock.. stooges/white stripes etc.  Good.

Muse: Black Holes and Revelations: Having never owned a Muse album I picked this up in Holyhead Woolies whilst waiting for the SeaCat to Dublin after I being impressed with a live performance from Leeds or Reading on the tele this Summer and hearing the odd tune on the radio.  It's brilliant.. reminds me of Queen & Rush with a bit of Radiohead chucked in for good measure.

Just Navigating the Four Tet Remixes Double Album. Really good if you like Four Tet, but a bit indulgent.

CD1 - Remixes of songs by other people by him ( broad range including Radiohead, Madvillan, Aphex Twin etc)
CD2 - Remixes of Four Tet Songs by other people (including 4 very different versions of A Joy).

Worth checking out if it sounds like your thing.

Good to hear - saw them last night in york, bit short due to it being a support slot but superb. The Simple Solution sounded particularly good with the addition of a huge throbbing bassline. If you're keen for more I can burn you the BBC sessions, a bit more like the live sound...
