Anything by BoC is well worth listening to - LaBradford are excellent as well - great music to have on in the background.

Few recommendations by me:

Exhaust: Exhaust
One Speed Bike: Droopy Butt Begone - both on Constellation Records and pretty random electronica with samples and other assorted weirdness.
Tortoise: Standards
Lindstrom and Prins Thomas: Lindstrom and Prins Thomas - nice chill out.

on a classical groove anyone checked arvo part's minimalist plink plonk? (for arlina ep) - it's fine stuff, gets me teary-eyed! - also might not qualify as ffffffunky fresh beats either but hey

Alongside a good friend, we've recently been debating the formation of an Arvo Part covers band (yes band). It would be a a guitar/electronic beats take on him. It's not a serious venture, but an interesting one! Stay tuned for aTabula Rasa top ten hit sometime soon!

Back on the subject of Nathan Fake, fans may or may not be aware he did a set on radio one back in March (I think it was). If anyones keen to hear this, it can be downloaded albumbase.com. Keyword Nathan Fake. Not advocating illegal downloads, but this one was and may still be available in the radio one archives. Enjoy

Mentioned this before and I'm not sure if it'll be in there, but a load of radio one shows (and other mixes) can be obtained from http://www.themixingbowl.org.  Some really good mixes there, some excellent Essential Mixes, Andy C, DJ Yoda and Rob Da Bank are particular favourites, and the Breezeblocks from 98-01 have some great gems in there, quite eclectic, some favourites are Prisoners of Technology (DnB), any of Andrew Weatherall's sets, and whatever takes your fancy really.

A lad who used to live in my town went by the alias of Datassette. He's moved to London now, but makes some good C64ish tunes.

I post this for the pocito percentage out there who like dark underground scouring abstract techno:   Swedish techno-kind Grovskopa.

If it's melody you're after, don't look here.  I'm undecided, nevertheless here he be:  http://www.grovskopa.com/  There's a link with plenny mixes.  I have a couple & it's enough.

For some reason, recently the Drunken Sailor shanty has been circling my head. There's something about it that really gets me. Here's the best version I could find - turn it up and feel the sea salt fill your ears...

http://www.yarmcentral.ednet.ns.ca/sailing_ships/shanties/drunken_sailor.mp3

Quote
Shanties are the work songs that were used on the square-rigged ships of the Age of Sail. Their rhythms coordinated the efforts of many sailors hauling on lines. Much loved by modern sailors and folk musicians, they are rarely used as work songs today. This is because modern rigging doesn't require many people to be working in the same rhythm for long periods.

Traditional shanties can be grouped into three types: short haul shanties, for tasks requiring quick pulls over a relatively short time; halyard shanties, for heavier work requiring more setup time between pulls; and capstan shanties, for long, repetitive tasks requiring a sustained rhythm, but not involving working the lines.

Blimey.

With acts such as Hissyfit and Stormalong John and Baggyrinkle from Wales I am indeed sorely tempted!

On a mellower note - Scott Mathews. Heard this guy on radio 6 the other day. Quite impressed. Got a nice Nick Drake/Jeff buckley thing going on.

That's my 34th birthday dude, and I shall be making a drunken pest of myself in Wales (all going well).  But thanks for the tip, the lady will love 'em.  (Somewhat Gang of 4-ish, but I'd never hold that against them.)

Trumans Water  A small-fry but fucking awesome band.  Of thick Tum is their 1st and best.  Peel played this record in it's entirity in a oner on R1 a decade ago.  How often do you hear of that happenning?

Two guitars and a drummer with a sound that's damn hard to describe.  It's spikey/many sharp edges.  Not extreme, Herr Pantontino.  Just damn good and damn original.

Saw him at the forum last week - pretty good.

Really enjoyed getting back into Godspeed You! Black Emperor whilst on holiday last month.

Ah - so you do have good taste after all, JB.   ;)

Godspeed you Black Emperor are supremely beautiful.  If you like these peeps then find Handwriting or The Sea & Bells by Rachels.  Give it a whirl - I'll bet you a pint you won't be disappointed.

After being introduced to Godspeed for the first time several years ago, I went to the Leeds festival. I noticed what I thought was their name on the line up and persuaded my friends they were worth seeing. We got to the tent early, and sat down on the ground. No one else was there. Then a couple of goths turned up. Then some more. Gradually, we were surrounded by white faces, piercings, black leather and big boots. I began to suspect something was not quite right. Then these chaps came on stage:

http://www.godhead.com/news.html

They picked up their instruments, plugged in their amps and started screaming at the microphones. I looked at my friends. They looked at me. We left.

Just noticed that Godspeed have a load of mp3s on their official website:
