hmmm, not sure about that, i certainly listen to a lot less 'south central LA' shit than david. i'd consider (in no particular order):

Nas - Illmatic (not judge him on his recent stuff this is ace)
common - one day it'll all make sense
skitz - countryman (british)
black star (mos def and talib kweli) - more chilled: dinner party hip-hop
rawkus soundbombing 2 is a BIG album
phi life cypher's first album, dunno the name
GZA - liquid swords for some ver dark beat heavy stuff (don't buy any onf the RZA's albums - they're pretty whack)
methodman and redman - blackout (don't judeg redman on the christina bollocks and the other shit he's done)
saian supa crew (french) - 1st album (blue n yellow cover) try and get the one with extra tracks as it has an amazing extra tune

most of that shit is a few years old but to be honest its better cos theres so much shit around at the moment.

it's hard to think when i'm slowly dying in an office - i'll have a think and get back to you. word.

Quite drum and bassy as well in places.

Found this a bit relentless - must listen to vols 1 and 3 as well since they're on the hard drive.

boy, it is relentless - i thought i'd offer the full spectrum though. we had it on full whack the other week while cruising up the pass in glorious weather... nice.

1 and 3 are a bit whack although 1 does feature mos def's universal magnetic.

word up, time to lizzay and plizzay with Dr Drizzay...my selecshaan be:

Jeru the Damaja - Wrath of the Math (pretty hard to get hold of nowadays)

Gang Starr - Moment of Truth

Nas - Illmatic, though 'It was written' is worth a listen, as are the DJ Premier produced tracks off 'I am...'

Dre - The Chronic (obvious - you must own this if only for 'Nuthin' but a G thang' in the car on a sunny day)

Snoop - Doggystyle (ditto)

Kanye West - The College Dropout

Roots Manuva - Run Come Save Me

Biggie - Ready to Die

Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai soundtrack (produced by the RZA)

Mobb Deep: The infamous...

Wu Tang Clan - Enter the Wu Tang (classic)

If you're gonna get Redman, get 'Dere iz a darkside', not 'Doc's da name' cos the latter is pony.

it's defo the best choice of all the Nas albums, i mean:

"i rap for listeners, bluntheadz, fly ladies and prisoners..."

"explore rap, and tell me Nas ain't all that..."

when has someone like, say, Puffy ever dropped anything like that??

Did you get Illmatic reissue wid the extra tracks? There's one called 'Star Wars' which is da bomb.

Lately he's gone off the boil a bit, seems to have 2-3 good tracks per album IMHO, though "Life we chose" off "Nastradamus" is worth the price of the CD alone. For real.

Also, forgot to mention the first Jurassic 5 album!

i know you grimy Dave, put the 817 on its ass wid a soulseek flava...you won't regret it - it's the first hiphop tune i ever heard which uses the word 'unadulterated'.

The man is (or at least was) a genius!

Some amazin stuff that i recently became acquainted to... because of a mates iriver or summit (ipod type thingy)

Guru - jazzmatazz, quality beats over a jazzy soundtrack
Dennis Rollins - badbone, amazin acid jazz kinda flava, seen this boy live with some awseome skills
4Hero- creating patterns, bit weird and random but some amazin production stuff on it
Pete Rock- petestrumentals
gil scott heron - ghetto stuff

All highly recomended. Also check Kelis album kaleidoscope tis not bad

I know that none of you hip-hoppers (except, maybe Dense - who expressed an interest in my last music tip: Wilco) will bother  , but I can't help but recommend Post to Wire by Richmond Fontaine.

Ultra classic Americana/Alt Country - it don't get any better than this. My new favourate album (until next week...).

I downloaded that Wilco but not listened yet. I've got a huge backlog of stuff to get through, but now we're allowed to listen to music at work I should be able to chomp through it.

maan, need to get myself hooked up this whole music piracy tip - I saw the Jeru CD about 6 years ago for £7 in a record shop, didn't buy it and that was it - never seen it since.

You may also want to seek out the 'Anotherlatenight' mix by Groove Armada, which has an acapella one of his ryhmes mixed into Ray Ayers

I found the Sublime Millenium Edition CD on sale the other day. Great stuff, but annoyingly censored. Probably why it was on sale.

Just listened to Orbital's Blue Album.

mmmmm.....s'okay, three tracks I rate, the rest I could take or leave.  Have never been an enormous fan of theirs really, though Belfast is superb.

Yo. If you want to check out another Nas album worth bending your ears around, get NastraDOOMous - Remixes by the man, MF Doom. Should be available on all good music stealing software.

Oh and the Madvillain album, Madvillainy (Doom by another pseudonym). think i have mentioned these before, but sooo good.

yeah, i second the nastradoomus album. And whilst we're on the topic of remix albums, get The White Albulum mixed by Kno (of cunninlynguists).  All the music was completely re-written, track orders changed, and it might even be better than the original!
