New Llyn Peninsular locations on Aquamarine
January 05, 2006, 04:41:09 pm
Hello,

Can anyone give me directions to some of the crags in the Aquamarine DVD? thinking of getting out down that way on Sunday with all this non-wet weather predicted, and fancy making the most of it.

Either that or we'll just do what Paul and co did and find out for ourselves where they are - though that'd actually require brain work....

Cheers

From Higg's OTE Oct 03 (issue 131) article:

Trwyn Talfarach 215257

Porth Nefoedd 231267

Gabbro wall 221260

From crossroads in Rhiw take lane out towards headland. If going to Nefoedd park where the road splits (224274). Walk down left lane until a stile on the left takes you over the wall. Go down the hillside trending left. the boulders soon come into view. (care needed on this descent)

For Talfarach continue down lane until metalled road ends (222268). Park off the road and considerately. Do not park at the farm. Walk down to the farm house and cross the yard, through the gate and follow path leading down the hill to the headland.

I may be being an idiot, (and before you ask, I have tried  :google: but all I get are sites that tell me the boulder/area I'm looking for is in the middle of the English Channel...) but can anyone explain to me how to use the grid references Simon kindly gives for these areas without recourse to an OS map?

I can use a map but this would involve either a) going round to my dad's and borrowing one or, b) buying a map myself and in any case what's the frigging internet for!?

Thanks...

I tend to use this site to check exact grid references http://www.geograph.org.uk/showmap.php?gridref=SH2326

I use Bing maps to get online OS maps. Zoom in to the rough area and you can apply the GR.

To avoid such confusion grid refs should have a code at the start to tell you which 500km square you are in. For North Wales it's SH.

PS - after some quick research :  http://sewhgpgc.co.uk/xc/os2.php

OS coodinates use the OSGB 36 grid. You'll need to convert this to a different coordinates system for many GPSs or mapping software. They tend to use WGS 84. The OSGB 36 grid square for the Llyn Peninsula is SH, so in full the grid references are:

Trwyn Talfarach SH215257

Porth Nefoedd SH231267

Gabbro wall SH221260

A bit of googling should throw up an OSGB 36 to WGS 84 converter, or converters to latitude/longitiude if that's what you're after.

If you use bing maps (http://www.bing.com/maps/) you can select ordnance survey maps (on the top left where it says road). Another option if you have an android phone is to download a free app called Maverick (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.codesector.maverick.lite) this will give you access to OS maps for the whole of the UK in your pocket (you can pre cache maps on wi fi when you know you aren't going to have any reception).

and put SH in front of them

I'm another big user of geograph, just tested your link at didn't work for me..

I would go to main page
http://www.geograph.org.uk/
eg for Trwyn Talfarach 215257, I'd type SH2125 in the search images box, then click on the os map for a pop up that zooms down to county records level for some places.. :smartass: :geek:

also works, put the SH in front of the ref in the "advanced search" bit.

For info, Streetmap.co.uk has a smart search feature that searches for OS grid, landranger, Lat/long etc.
Like others you do need the two letter prefix, also has a handy built in co-ordinates converter (tiny link below map)

Sorry you're right, try this http://www.geograph.org.uk/showmap.php?gridref=SH2326

you can then get to the one I linked to by clicking on the OS map area near the top of the page

The ability to zoom to parish level is pretty useful I must confess
