Collecting gritstone from the peak
April 26, 2017, 02:47:32 pm
Does anyone think it would be frowned upon if I were to take 20 or 30 grit blocks, of roughly housebrick volume or a bit more, home to use round the edge of my pond?
If not, can anyone suggest where I might find some? Maybe in a crappy quarry where nobody would notice some missing, and preferably near a road...
I've been racking my brains and I can't think of anywhere.
Cheers, Si.

I'm fairly certain that this is illegal and anyway it removes habitat for many small creatures. I'd go down the local reclamation yard if I were you, it shouldn't be too expensive.

Does it have to be grit? An hour's work at Raven Tor with a crowbar should sort you out.

If it's definitely gritstone you're after then have a look through the Lancs Bouldering Guide. You could carry some of them away with the added bonus that you could have some projects in your rockery.

the council use the car park of the old bannerdale centre off carterknowle road to store road related material - they did have a load of big grit blocks and told a friend of mine they could have some of the broken ones

might be worth going down and speaking to them

there used to be a lot of blocks of rock on the bit of ground above the quarry with Homebase at the bottom - basically where Derbyshire Lane meets Scarsdale Road - was some grit and some granite headstone offcuts etc - mostly scattered in the trees near the gate opposite the crossed scythes pub

legally this probably still all belongs to the bloke who owns Pondsford, but it would be better than taking it from the Peak National Park

Not sure this is a good idea.  If you get caught by a land owner, be it private or a ranger etc then I suspect they might not take kindly.

Plus, the old adage of if we all took 30 bits each for our gardens etc etc.

Take nowt but photos leave nowt but footprints (and chalk tick marks obv)

If you compare geological maps and OS maps you can find tons of quarries well outside the peak, plenty within city boundaries. Some of these are rank fly-tip hell-holes (I speak as a new prob hunter who has visited plenty!). Really nobody is going to miss a few blocks taken from these, whatever the law says. Any residual guilt can easily be assuaged by taking home a binbag full of old nappies and used needles when you leave.

Plus old nappies and drug paraphernalia make for an interesting talking point when placed around any garden pond.

I've found the odd dilapidated dry stone wall a productive source, not that such action should be condoned

I'm in the process of slowly procuring a collapsed dry stone wall for a major platforming project. One block at a time, will take a few years.

I'll get it one block at a time
And it won't cost me a dime
You'll know it's me when I come through your town
I'm gonna lay it all out in style
I'm gonna drive everybody wild
'Cause I'll build the greatest patio around.

With apologies to Johnny Cash
