is there any bouldering here, or anywhere near? I'm going here for my 6-week mapping project this summer and need some climbing to stop me going insane.

i don't know exactly about the pass, but nufenen is the small (very small) village where i was staying this past summer, and it's 15 mins drive from magic wood and one hour from cresciano.
does this help?

yes, and nufenenpass is like 15 minutes away from san gottardo bouldering area and maybe 45 minutes from chironico.
now, does THIS help?
time to be a happy geologist again i think.

it's in the "san gottardo bouldering" guide, that you can purchase in cresciano, chironico and the likes. it comes with a discount if you buy it with one of the two others "cresciano bouldering" or "chironico bouldering", for 45 francs, if i remember well.
i will bring the giude with me when i'll get at your place the evening of the your very first day, so don't buy it yet.

Let me know what month you are doing the field work Andi, as I was planning on going over to Magic Wood for a month or 2 in summer, then maybe on to check out some new areas in Italy!

Its ok. You need the guide (from the tourist office in bellinzona). It gets well cold up there even in the summer so take more than shorts and a wife beater (I froze my tits off).
Also be prepared to be spanked on 6th grade problems
