Well at the moment its largely anecdotal, but netflix seems to work fine on the iPad (same room) but stutter and buffer on the Chromecast...

Does the iPad stutter/buffer when placed in the same area as the Chromecast (obviously might be tricky watching it behind the TV)?  Does this happen simultaneously (good playback on iPad, stuttering/buffering on Chromecast whilst watching the same thing)?

Also, have you tried changing channels on your WiFi router to a stronger one (even if you can't use an application such as perviously suggested)

Have you another TV you can try it on?

I find that Netflix can buffer a bit on my PS3 which has a wired connection to the router which sits next to it.  Its sometimes a problem at the other end.

Not trying to be picky, but it could simply be that you got a dodgy unit, it happens, but its possible to trouble shoot other aspects to narrow down the problem.

I suspect the wifi connection - as the buffering went from very bad to fairly bad by using the chromecast extension lead... Sadly router and TV locations are annoyingly fixed...

If they can't be moved then the last thing to try would be a different channel for your WiFi, particularly useful is avoiding busy channels that lots of your neighbours might also be using.  Could still be worth trying streaming the iPad next to the TV (rather than sat on the couch on the other side of the room where I guess its been tried?).

£20 at Currys at the mo

Well I bought two of these, one for my Dad and one for myself. Finally I got around to setting it up yesterday and I'm seriously underwhelmed.

Screen casting works (Nexus 7), but just. It's laggy as hell and not very usable at all (that's with any app not just video or bandwidth heavy apps).
Streaming video from my ReadyNAS to it via various players is unwatchable. It continually buffers.
Streaming local video (from the tablet) is unwatchable. It continually buffers, stutters etc.

The only thing that works well is Apps with built in cast support (such as iplayer), I imagine these are picking some optimum stream to use and thus I'm not having an issue.

It's not as if the CC is far from the router either (one very poorly constructed modern wall), although the router itself is an old Linksys WRT54g. Strangeley I've tested the same video files from the NAS to the Pi (running raspmbc) and that just destroys the CC (especially in supported codecs, I'm not going to start re-encoding all of the old climbing clips I have either [p0rn]).

Does anybody have any clues?

I'll try casting from another device and see if that has any impact.
I'm thinking if it isn't faulty then the router is.

Anyone got one of these working properly yet? Just needs a HDMI input right?

Looking at options for a projector at work - death by powerpoint etc. Looks a lot cheaper than epson's £100 dongle, which gets shit reviews...

I'm pretty unimpressed to be honest - but if you want a punt you can take mine off my hands for a tenner... seems to need a fairly strong wifi signal....

Cheers, I'll take it please yes. Seem to remember Paul B bought a new router? Ours is shit anyhoo, so I'd rather spend on that than a dongle.

OK - landed from Australia at 6am this morning - so I won't try and find it and the box today or I'll do something daft (fall asleep in the cellar or somewhere random) but I'll dig it out in the next day or so if thats OK.. Probably be out in the Peak at some point in the next four days if its easier to meet up than post etc...

Ours works fine, easily worth £30 to watch iplayer on our non-smart telly alone.

Was looking to get Chromecast but just come across the Amazon Fire Stick and reviews seem to suggest it outperforms the Chromecast. Anyone got one of these and care to share knowledge/experience?

Yes I did; a tp-link offering for around £30, so far its been great and the setup was a doddle. Moving into the new place I had to switch modes with it to 'piggyback' (with permission of course) the existing router connection, this took <5 seconds.

Since updating the router, Chromecast has been bulletproof although since my NowTV 3 months free has expired I haven't used it too much.

Tescos selling Chromecast 2 @ £25 and you get £20 of Google Play credit.

Tescos are also doing a "double your points" at the moment so if you've £10 of Clubcard points this doubles to £20 and you then pay £5 for the Chromecast 2 with £20 of Google Play credit.

In essence you're paying £5 for a Chromecast2 and swapping credit at Tescos for credit at Google Play.

Too lazy to re-read the thread (vague recollection people complaining about connection problems but solved through new routers with stronger signal?*) and I can't be arsed searching for issues with the Chromecast 2.

I don't own a Chromecast 2 either to say how they compare but I've three of the original chromecasts all working fine on Wifi around the house (not an old build with thick stone walls though).

* Why the fuck I remember shit like this I do not know.
