new sheffield boulders
March 27, 2010, 10:45:18 am
just a quick note about two new boulders recently arrived in the sheffield area, one in darnall (up darnall road from the zeenat/don valley stadium turn off in attercliffe), and another in richmond park (over the circular road, through intake towards handsworth)
both are part of regeneration schemes, hence the locations aren't too 'leafy', but the rocks are cool, with potential for some hard stuff.

Any chance of some Google Map linkys for exact positioning?

What state are the other urban boulders in these days? Still fine or holds full of glass and dog poo (to be fair, i've only seen that once).

Darnall is a bit scary - there is already a burial cross in the background.

They just bury em where they fall in those parts.

heeley is a bit neglected but there are plans to improve it, cemetry road is good, st mary's/ponderosa park never really used, and a bit naff.
there's been a boulder building boom this winter, loads elsewhere in uk (really nice 9 boulder circuit in ilford etc.)
re. glass/poo - bubba, thats a horrible thought, where's your faith in humanity?

The heeley one is fine. Some graffitti. I live round the corner and have used it a lot. Ive only seen glass on the holds once in 10 years.

I think a lot of people think its not very good. Ive never understood that. Its excellent.

Looking at the top one will be checking if the Flakey Pastry boulder has not been stolen.

I grew up a stone's throw from Richmond Park.
Its quite a nice park TBH  - would have been great to have had that boulder when I was obsessed with climbing but didn't know how to get to the crags

I like the boulders around Sheffield too, the Heeley and Cemetry Park ones being the best (not tried these new ones yet).

Infinitely cheaper than walls and ideal for a quick session when its too much hassle getting out to the countryside (e.g. poor forecast of showers).

I did however cut my finger tip a week ago at Heeley on a tiny sliver of glass in a pocket (perhaps I should man-up and use the crimps more frequently) and also ruined a relatively new pair of shoes by slashing the toe on some glass (that'll teach me to wear new shoes there).

I always remove any glass that I do see (and its usually at the base and not in the pockets) and imagine that others do too.  Only ever seen dog-poo on the Ponderosa boulder, but thats log anyway.

@al : Heard a rumour that more boulders were going to be put in at Heeley?

there are some plans, but funds may not be there to do much (think these kind of projects will be among the first to go with cut backs after the election) - at least we'd like to re-spray/carve the existing boulder, but any extra boulders may only be small kids stuff. other proposals are to make some climbing structures from cheaper/more interesting objects (tree trunks etc.)
re. glass in pockets - its definitely worth checking before climbing, especially up at the two new boulders  ;)

Just curious as to why Sheffield has the monopoly on these park boulders?

Is it because of some enlightenment on te council's behalf, or did someone approach the council and sell them on the idea?

Just curious, as there is a big regeneration plan for Union Gardens in Aberdeen, and it would be nice to have some here. Esp as it across the road from work!

don't think its ever been a hard sell in sheffield, chris - there's a couple of keen people high up in the planning/parks dept. that see it as a way to encourage uncouthyouth to try climbing, as well as a nod to the nearby peak district and an awareness that climbing is big in sheffield. also there is an admirable effort to provide free, outdoor facilities for those that appreciate it, which may have roots in sheffield's past role as a socialist republic  - sheffield isn't unique though, they've been going in all over the place over the past few years

There's a few up north (england) as well.

This one being less than 5 minutes from my house, http://www.climbonline.co.uk/whickham_thorns.htm, is pretty convenient.

About an hour south of me is this one, http://www.climbonline.co.uk/summerhill_boulders.htm.

Went and checked out the one in Darnall yesterday on my way home.  Requested Google Maps link...

Easy to find as you drive along Darnall Road from the Don Valley Stadium end keep an eye out for two pubs on the right-hand side of the road (The Sportsman and The Albert), its in the field behind these.

Some pics of the finished article...

Looks barely used with very little chalk on holds under the overhang (which is where I'd expect chalk to collect).

Few kids were keen to scramble about on it for a though, so its maybe getting more use from them than climbers.

Not sure if it's been mentioned on UKB already but there's also a fairly recently added one (+2 very small kid's boulders) in Green Oak Park Totley. Looks to have good potential for hard stuff but haven't got round to trying it out yet.

Wasn't specifically choosing kids/adults (although have commented that the one at St Mary's is more suited for kids as there's nothing that hard).

I didn't know about the Endcliffe Park ones, so thanks for the heads up, have added them.

Just been made aware of another kids boulder in the park between Langsett Crescent and Walkley Road that I've marked on the map as Langestt Crescent Park Boulder thanks to Giuly for the heads up.

Another friend also pointed out that there are now boulders in a park on the Manor Estate, also on the map .

Don't all rush over at once.  :P
