Anyone been in the Sheffield Tap at the train station? Apparently it's the old first class lounge done out serving a reported 12 ales. Spotted it t'other week with Thornbridge ales advertised on the windows and recalled seeing it when someone just mentioned it now.

Yes, excellent selection of beers, some are quite pricey (particularly foreign lagers on tap).

Huuuuge selection of bottled beers.

Nice decor.

Only down-side is its rather small and gets busy easily == cramped.

I think the Sheffield Tap is a proper local success story.
There were all sorts of things going on between the regulatory powers (I'm being deliberately vague) and a certain large pub chain to try and stand in the way of Jamie and John's plans.
They serve (I think) 8 Thornbridge Brewery beers on draft as well as loads of others (as Slackers notes)
The rooms have been tastefully restored and I hear there are plans to expand into other parts of the previous bar/eating rooms.
I only know so much as someone at work is good mates with Jamie and John and helped do some of the painting.
Its well worth a look/pint if you're at or near the train station

I've half a bottle of this 7.2% bock to drink

Having used the other half in this recipe

Ale-braised Cabbage

    * 1 white cabbage, roughly chopped
    * 1 large onion (or 2 small), peeled and sliced
    * 1 clove garlic, crushed
    * 8 cloves
    * 4 bay leaves
    * 1 tsp fennel seeds
    * 1 tsp caraway seeds
    * 2 tbsp light brown sugar
    * 4 sprigs fresh thyme
    * 500ml ale
    * 50g butter

Preheat oven to 190°C/375°F/gas 5. Layer all of the ingredients in a deep ovenproof dish (you’ll need one with a lid, or wrap tightly with foil). Pour the beer over the ingredients, dot with the butter and braise in the oven for about an hour. Serve with any kind of meat or with thick pieces of dark rye bread.

Savage - the lengths one will go - to use the less exciting ingredients in ones' seasonal box.

Alarmingly quaffable.

Fuck that liquid dross!

I'm currently enjoying 6.8% Dithmarcher Mai-bock

Wickedly hop-tastic, brewed and on sale for a short time each year, and €3.50 for a six pack of 330ml w/ lovely old fashioned "plopp" tops.

Had some of this in the Devonshire Cat a couple of weeks ago - really nice beer with a hint of toffee that you usually find in a darker coloured beer than this.

A* - highly recommended - would buy again etc.

Stopped into the tap last night:

Timmermans kriek, ok so its a fruit beer but it tastes like liquid haribo cherries. Mmmmm

Bernard Pivo, European style, not particularly exciting

Dark Star 6 Hop

 I think I fell in love. Its like Jaipur but on steriods (Has anyone else found the Jaipur at the Tap to be lacking? It still tastes better bottled to me and I'm sure thats wrong!)

They seemed to have dropped the apple boq... hope they re-instate it when the sun shines!

Nat tried the Floris Passion, you can't get a more girly less beery beer. Avoid.

The rodenbach ruby she tried after that was much better, not sweet at all and came in at around 5-6%.

The prices are still reasonable high and it had doormen which seems a bit much for what is essentially a pub (albeit one with a station attached).

 :lol: Good point, well made!

Real Ale I can do. Rugby I can do. Finding a place that does both, and does them well, is a bit more tricky!

Supped a half of this earlier:

http://beerevolution.wordpress.com/2010/01/29/strawberry-and-pink-peppercorn-stout/

Was pleasantly surprised, not too sweet or gimmicky, very subtle flavouring, very pleasant, you could easily drink a few (if that's what you do despite all sporting-scientific reccomendations...)

Was at interval, shef uni union

Apparently its National Cask Ale Week this week.

In light of this University Arms, Sheffield have promos running all week in conjunction with Thornbridge Brewery.
