Summer bouldering: 5.5 hours from Calais max
January 16, 2014, 04:28:30 pm
Its agreed that were going somewhere the other side of the Channel for a family holiday this August. We've got free Eurotunnel tickets as we were severely delayed last year.
The maximum drive time allowed is 5.5 hours from Calais and I'm allowed (subject to other criteria too detailed to go into here) that it can be somewhere where I can climb (boulder obvs)
I've had a good few hours looking at various sites/links/blogs as well as things like zebloc and TBH havent really come up with anything so far.
The best I can guess at is that there is something near Strasbourg or in the Pfalz. Maybe in Burgundy ?

So any recommendations or ideas please.

I believe there's somewhere just south of Paris. There must be a good reason it's not on your list.

2 possible options are Freyr in Belgium and the Morvan in France. Neither have the best bouldering but stuff is being developed. I've not been to Freyr, and I've not climbed in the Morvan. The Morvan is a beautiful area in the North of Burgundy and is just doable in 5.5h.

Hottee du Diable is a nice local spot for a few hours north east of Paris near Coincy, if you have kids, there's plenty for them to get involved in, I try to go whenever I fly in/out of Charles de Gaulle. Lovely pretty villages all about, patisseries etc... quite a few easys and a few 7s - probably only good for one day, but if you choose to stop off before going on further, I can recommend. Bit like Font, but a lot smaller and less polish. I like it there.

I didn't mention le hottee du diable because it's brutally hot in the summer, sitting on a hill with no shade. It is a nice spot for a day or two, close to Reims too, think Champagne.

true, I guess it would get hot, it's got a bit of a cul de chien vibe about it actually...

Curious - why not Brittany? Because you've been before or because you don't rate it?

Freyr in Belgium

Freyr is shit, its like a bigger more polished version of Symonds Yat. Echternach in Luxembourg might be worth a look, its a pretty cool little area.

I've never understood why there's no documented bouldering at Berdorf in Luxembourg. Looks like some great walls and roofs at the bottom ofthe crags.
