Freezing fog in Font.
December 06, 2013, 11:37:40 am
Any opinions on wether this is good or bad? I'm going next week and the forecast is dry, with some days of fog. Grey cold days, no sun I can remember being good, but I can't remember the conditions that freezing fog produces.

Bad in my experience, if there is fog then there is no wind and it will take days to dry.

Depends on if the moisture is condensing on the rock. It could stay sopping wet for days, it could be climbable. I'd be wary of the forecast and although blanket fog is forecast fot the whole of France on Tuesday it may not turn out to be everywhere (if you're using meteofrance you'll find that it tends to forecast pesimistically). Basically, you'll have go somewhere quick drying and check out the rock.

I've climbed in freezing fog at Almscliff (its a long way from font but I assume the principles of atmospheric physics are equally applicable..) - and its been mint. Really bizarre - air feels cold and damp - but it was not condensing on the rock at all - it was mega sticky, probably the best conditions I've ever had there... And I nearly just turned the car around without having a look...

I've been there in Feb with similar sounding conditions, we found that there was an almost invisible thin layer of ice over the rock on still days which would melt when you tried to use the holds!  I think if there's a bit of wind then these sort of conditions don't stick around.

You might have a bit more luck going to the more open, slightly higher or more exposed spots.

Thinking about it, I remember being in Font in all the conditions described above. But I've never looked at a forecast before going predicting freezing fog. The plus side is that it's not forecasting rain. mainly the forecast is sun, freezing fog or fog. So fingers crossed as per usual.

rempart is another popular option for damp days. better than 95.d'oh

btw:
-conditions have been very good lately.
-the meteociel forecast looks very good

-if it's foggy in the morning, wait a bit.

That forecast is much more optimistic  :)

I nearly sacked off going due to a shitty forecast. I took a punt and it was the best week's climbing weather I've ever had.
Don't forget that the rock retains some heat from days and weeks before. If it's just fog and no rain it might be mint, however...

I must have been out at the same time. The whole place was a foggy mess and because it was so cold, like you say the rocks were just coated in ice. It meant that it took an age to even begin to dry out. Never seen it like that before.

Conditions are indeed excellent, at least for the five hours a day I'm not freezing cold in my van!
