Euro Road Trip Technology
November 07, 2013, 03:43:21 pm
Off on me travels for two, maybe three, months next year (road trip with big van to Spain, France and Morocco). Any recommendations for technical stuff I need so I can (pretend to) work while I'm away? So far the list is a short one: a new laptop and a pair of sandals.

no need for the sandals

take a mobile phone and charger

maybe a pen and paper

that'll be £899.10 management consultancy fee (with UKB discount)

If Duncan Disorderly doesn't post on this thread himself them drop him a PM as he did a month away earlier this year while working on the road (allegedly).  ;)

1) Laptop with wifi

2) Map showing where McDonalds and Starbucks with free wireless are

1) may have 2) on it but you might not be able to see 2) without access to said wireless, hence need for pen and paper.

Oh and

3) Kindle

(jammy bastard btw)

A solar re charger might be a good idea, likewise one of those usb sticks that give you pay as you go internet access.

Decathlon and Flunch gives free internet as well.

3G kindle gives you slow but workable internet access for free worldwide (you can just about read your emails and the odd text heavy website). (it does no flash, movies and is clunky with the paperink display but just about does the job..)

When I'm abroad for a while I subscribe to the Grauniad Kindle edition (£10 month) and you get that delivered to Kindle every morning..

Planning something similar (without the pretending to work bit!) and have found some info that suggests that internet access in Morocco is available pretty cheaply. One source of this info is:

I did work a bit  :-[

We got one of these:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/131021453388?lpid=83&device=c&adtype=pla&crdt=0&ff3=1&ff11=ICEP3.0.0&ff12=67&ff13=80&ff14=83&ff19=0

We then got it unlocked for about £2 (see ebay again) and then got an Orange FR sim with a shedload of data - SFR were better I think but didn't have a shop in Cham....

Worked really well in France but didn't in Italy...

Also got an inverter in the van for charging shizz without a usb.... Worked a treat!

:D

A portable power bank and some mini/micro USB leads?

If you're away from mains/car chargers for any length of time, one of these will power your toys for a few days.
